Republican Governor of AR

How come no one is mentioning Arkansas Governor Huckabee as a potential presidential candidate in '08? I really think McCain and Rudy won't make it with the conservatives in the Republican party. Could this guy be a sleeper?

Nope. He might not even carry the state. The sleeper is Tom Coburn from Ok.

Really? He's not very popular, huh? Is that with your crowd or in general? But he wouldn't have to carry Arkansas to win the presidency.

I might vote for him. I certainly would before all those liberals you mentioned. He is for school consolidation which isn't popular here , especially with the liberals. I don't think Clinton carried this state the last time he ran. I never voted for the war protester clinton but he might be popular with people in your crowd.

Liberals? Rudy and McCain? Interesting take. The only poll numbers I could find for Huckabee had him at 51% about this time last year. That's not bad, if you look at approval numbers on other governors.

Yes he did. By a fairly substantial margin, even.
You are right. Maybe it was my county he couldn't carry. Anyway it was a blue day for me with one small spot of feel good. Must have been the county.

How do you like coburn? He has been a fiscal conservative which is one of the things you've blasted the republicans for .
That's ok Dis. I fully expected you not to answer my question . You are way above talking to lowly conservatives. Notice though I did answer yours. You certainly would know something about the newest flamboyant conservative senator on the block if you know 51% of the respondants of my state are supporting Huckabee. You surely know he voted against extending the debt ceiling. I also see he didn't vote for the SS for illegal aliens.

I think Coburn is too radical to get the nod from the Republican party. He's rubbed the old boys wing of the party the wrong way by bringing their wild spending to the public's attention, as if we hadn't noticed. I'm not a Republican, of course, so I might be very wrong.

I try to answer civil questions like this one. But I do have a life that occasionally takes me away from the keyboard.

I personally think you got it wrong. I think they held coburn out on purpose to run on the fact (if the Dems make a big deal out of the spending) he's a fiscal conservative. He voted no at the best advice of the old boys I think. I am suspicious when it comes to government though. If it's a non issue , they'll run mccain.

McCain will be the Republican nominee for President in '08. Is that your final answer?

If that's the case, many people on this board won't support him. Does that mean the Dems will take back the White House in '08.

The Dems don't have a viable candidate in any of the frontrunners , period. I'm more electable than hillbilly.

I don't think McCain will get the nod, at least I hope not. I really think the Dems will make a big deal out of the spending of the republicans, and they should, and the republicans will be forced to push someone that is a fiscal conservative , Tom Colburn. At this time , I think it'll be him.

If "hillbilly" is your pet name for Senator Hillary Clinton, dream on. I think if she chooses to run and gets the nomination, she'd have a very good chance of being elected as our first female president. She'd have one of the best ever campaigners on her side. If Al Gore had not separated himself from Bill Clinton, he'd likely be our President. Oh, wait, he did get more votes than George W. Bush. How could I forget something like that?

The Dems should make a big deal out of Republican spending. For a party who's strength has always been fiscal responsibility, their current track record is terrible. Worse than terrible. But I don't think a one trick pony, fiscal conservative, will cut it. Americans are looking for more than that.

So , do you think hillary will be president? (snicker)

I don't know. I think if she wants and can get the Democratic nomination, she'll have a very good chance of being elected the first woman president. She doesn't have a long track record in the Senate that can be used against her. Unlike Rudy and McCain, she doesn't have a divorce or an extramarital affair to be held against her, at least as far as we know. She will probably hire many of the same people Bill Clinton used when he ran and they're good, very good. Don't forget that Al Gore got more votes than Bush. Her chances will be good especially if things continue as they are in this country until '08. People are not happy with Congress, in general, very unhappy with the current Republican Administration, disgusted with the pandering Bush is doing to the extreme right wing. Look at today. Six years after he's elected, President Bush calls for an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to ban gay marriage! Why now? We all know the truth there, poll numbers. The only people who might be fooled are people like you. He doesn't really support it, Laura Bush doesn't support it, Dick Cheney doesn't support it, it probably will fail in the Senate, but Bush is out there saying the magic words that Republicans hope will get people like you fired up for the election this fall.
