Here is the Reserve Champion Market Steer. South Devon cross.
This is a horrible picture. I don't know who took it, but it is the one
we have at the newspaper.

Usually the editor does, but she didn't this year. I don't know who took this one. Sure too bad it isn't any better.

Thanks, Hanta. I was hoping folks could see through the bad for the good.
Interesting that a cattle buyer stopped at the fair and said none of the steers were finished. This one will go to the Parade of Champions in Miles City this weekend.

This is the steer that you posted pics of a few weeks ago, isn't it? I'm glad that she did so well with him........:D

Too bad the pic didn't come out better......even not set up, it would be better than him having his hind legs tucked up under him......:(

At our local 4-H show, the Angus based cattle took all the "on the hoof" awards.
When it came to the carcass competition(where it matters), however, an animal that did not even place anywhere else won it hands down. Blew the rest away on cutability(yield) marbling, etc. Graded prime as well.
It was a Charolais. :)

:D

I'll ask what the B/W was next time I see the guy I bought my last bull from. It was his daughter's calf. :)
Hey Mikey, the Great State of Alabama sort of made me late for supper last night.......I was out cutting and there was a radio program called "Off The Record" on(maybe you get there as well). Anyway, they had a special about 'Skynrd on. I was forced to stay out there working until it was over. Excellent. :D :D :)

Not familiar with "Llttle Feats" music. I'll look for it next time I'm at the CD store. From wat they said on the radio program, the new lead singer is Ronnie Van Zandt's brother, and some of the other new members are people that have played with them off and on over the years.

Lynrd Skynrd's music is timeless, if you ask me......and my kids. :)

I meant all the people in the audience were young folks. Lots younger than me!

I guess it's sort of a re-incarnation.

I have noticed a lot of underfinished calves at fairs. I say this as I sort my own fats and generally hit 80% or better Choice.

I remember a friend complaining his son won a fair and they did a carcass competition., The guy says, "Well it placed in the middle, so the guys in the carcass grading must not of known what they were doing." Well, we are friends, so i said nothing, but thought, "Ummmm.....No, the Carcass is the bottom line, the guys on the hoof grading, they were the ones proved wrong".....

A final twist...My Private label sales are going gangfbusters. Typically, I will sort them to kill maybe 3 weeks before what I would normally send to Tyson....If I have excess calves, I feed them out longer for Tyson....My customers don't like a lot of fat, but I make up for it by dry-aging for 3 weeks. It is beef like most have never had.....

FH has mentioned she'd like to see my thots on a class of calves at a fair. I look at them as a guy who gets paid premiums or docked discounts.....First thing look at is where I think they will grade, then where I think they will wiegh/yield hanging.....It is the natural way I have come about evaluating fat calves, to see what dollar amount they will be worth...

That steer had a nice hip, the rest is kinda hard for me to tell, but he shoulda been pretty good from what I can se. I would need a front view to,

BTW, the most important thing is the kids learning what they can accomplish with some effort,
