Retired Marine General Jim Jones is the leading candidate to be President-elect Barack Obama's national security adviser, CNN and Politico are reporting today.

Jones is a former Marine Corps commandant and supreme commander of NATO, and Obama said during the third presidential debate that he values his counsel.

"If I'm interested in figuring out my foreign policy, I associate myself with my running mate, Joe Biden or with Dick Lugar, the Republican ranking member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, or General Jim Jones, the former supreme allied commander of NATO," Obama said during the debate.

Other names that have been mentioned are Susan Rice, a senior adviser during the campaign, and James B. Steinberg, former deputy national security adviser.
