Rifle/ wolf question

I'll put this here in PB cause it will probably get moved here anyway.

Yesterday on the news they were interviewing a couple that "lived " with a wolf pack for a awhile. They were telling about how gentle they were and just one big happy family.
They were saying hunters have killed 11,000 of the 17,000 wolves in the US since they were delisted. They are using silencers on their rifles. Is that legal?

In doing a quick check on the internet: Idaho does not prohibit using silencers, but ATF requires a license to possess a sliencer.

Here are a couple of sites on wolf numbers;

www.fws.gov/midwest/wolf/aboutwolves/index.htm

www.wolf.org/wolves/learn/wow/regions/canada/

Silencers are legal to own in every state with an ATF tax. And as Martin says, a few states allow them hunting.

But they're not really silencers. They're "Suppressors". Especially when shooting super-sonic ammo. Below around 1,100 fps (subsonic) they work reasonably well to control the "crack" of the bullet passing through the sound barrier.

All the "Suppessor" does is muffle the powder blast somewhat.

It is very hard to know from which direction a suppressed round was fired though. We had some poachers using them at night and they fooled us more than once.

I have one on a .22 rimfire and all you hear is the firing pin hitting the cartridge and the bullet impact.

MT has a couple of bills in the legislature allowing silencers... I haven't followed them to see how they are doing...

Maybe I'm just getting to be an old fart- but gun/scope combinations that will take down game at a mile away- guns with 30 round clips so you can flock shoot until you hit something- and now silencers... To me it seems its taking away some of the sporting fairness...

Silencers/suppressors & the associated subsonic rounds aren't compatible with long range shooting. Don't put those in the same boat..........

And don't over exaggerate on the distances. A mile away is still a "fer piece" even with modern hunting guns.

There are still things such as "gravity" that are a hindrance.........

Staying sub sonic improves accuracy for me. Can maintain most of the energy with 60-62 grain bullets. Redneck/ira surpessor will take about a box to a whisper, cost 2 bucks to fabricate.

If I remember right from a book I read on the Mossad- the .22 rimfire pistol with a silencer/suppressor was their chosen assassination weapon...

They're the choice of weapon when squirrel hunting too.

Did Reader tell you that?

Nope.... My sister worked with Israeli intelligence folks when she was on both the counter intelligence and counter terrorism units... And she sent me a couple of books outlining the history of the Mossad....

A very ruthless, but professional group... The books went into much of the details of how the Israeli secret police units worked with the FBI and CIA and British Intelligence to carry out many secret operations... Altho they didn't name individual operations- it left you wondering how many assassinations they carried out over the years for the US...

The authors several times mentioned they had no proof of Mossad involvement- altho the assassination weapon had been Mossads favorite - the 22 rimfire with a silencer...

How would they tell that the 22 had been fired with a silencer?

It's very quiet. But not silent. If you'll notice, the sights aren't visible when sighting on a target. For point blank close work only. LOL

Nobody heard them !!

I am aware that some of the home made type using metal filings or steel wool will leave markings on the bullet (besides the rifling)... Most factory ones don't leave any markings tho..

???????????????? The baffle filler doesn't touch the bullet. WTF?

The filler for absorbing & trapping the shockwave that follows the projectile down the barrel through the inside holes of the supressor.

If you're gonna make a homeade one use a very small oil filter from say a lawnmower and match some barrel threads to the threads on the filter, and drill a hole larger than the bullet in the end of the filter. Works pretty dang good.
