Hundreds of Colorado students protest history curriculum changes that would promote patriotism

ARVADA, Colo. – Hundreds of students walked out of classrooms around suburban Denver on Tuesday in protest over a conservative-led school board proposal to focus history education on topics that promote citizenship, patriotism and respect for authority, in a show of civil disobedience that the new standards would aim to downplay.

The youth protest in the state's second-largest school district follows a sick-out from teachers that shut down two high schools in the politically and economically diverse area that has become a key political battleground.

Student participants said their demonstration was organized by word of mouth and social media. Many waved American flags and carried signs, including messages that read "There is nothing more patriotic than protest."

"I don't think my education should be censored. We should be able to know what happened in our past," said Tori Leu, a 17-year-old student who protested at Ralston Valley High School in Arvada.

The school board proposal that triggered the walkouts in Jefferson County calls of instructional materials that present positive aspects of the nation and its heritage. It would establish a committee to regularly review texts and course plans, starting with Advanced Placement history, to make sure materials "promote citizenship, patriotism, essentials and benefits of the free-market system, respect for authority and respect for individual rights" and don't "encourage or condone civil disorder, social strike or disregard of the law."

The proposal from Julie Williams, part of the board's conservative majority, has not been voted on and was put on hold last week. She didn't return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment Tuesday, but previously told Chalkbeat Colorado, a school news website, that she recognizes there are negative events that are part of U.S. history that need to be taught.

"There are things we may not be proud of as Americans," she said. "But we shouldn't be encouraging our kids to think that America is a bad place."

A student demonstrator, Tyrone G. Parks, a senior at Arvada High School, said Tuesday that the nation's foundation was built on civil protests, "and everything that we've done is what allowed us to be at this point today. And if you take
that from us, you take away everything that America was built off of."

The proposal comes from an elected board with three conservative members who took office in November. The other two board members were elected in 2011 and oppose the new plan, which was drafted in response to a national framework for teaching history that supporters say encourages discussion and critical thinking. Detractors, however, say it puts an outsize emphasis on the nation's problems.

Kids are showing more intelligence and common sense then the rightwingernuts of the board that want to hide anything bad that happened in this country's history...

No matter if it was the Whiskey Rebellion, the Indian Wars, the Civil War, The Ludlow Massacre (or other union wars), Black Sunday of the Selma to Montgomery marches, Kent State, etc., etc.- they are history and should be taught as they happened...
We are supposed to learn from history-- not hide it!

I didn't read anything in that article that said ANY HISTORY would be hidden. Are we reading on the same page?

By the way, what's wrong with "focusing" on patriotism, promoting citizenship, and respect for authority?

Are you as stupid as you seem?

Over the course of our countries history-civil disorder and social strikes have played a big roll in our history... Many of these involved unions...
And often like the Whiskey Rebellion, many of the union protests, the marches in Selma disregarded the current law- BUT THEY HAPPENED...So they should not be slighted or left from the rewriting of history.....

I have long been a backer of promoting our country, patriotism, voting, community involvement, knowledge of the legal system, etc-- but that needs to be done in Civics and American Government class... Not by bending/censoring history...

Colorado School Board Votes to Ban Students

By Andy Borowitz

ARVADA, Colo. (The Borowitz Report) — A conservative school board in Arvada, Colorado, that earlier purged its history curriculum of materials it deemed unpatriotic has voted to ban students from its schools for espousing similarly objectionable views.

“At the end of the day, it would be the height of hypocrisy to ban unpatriotic books from our schools but allow unpatriotic students to attend them,” Harland Dorrinson, a spokesman for the school board, said. “This was a very easy call for us.”

By transforming its schools into “student-free zones,” he explained, Arvada expects to realize significant cost savings, mainly through the elimination of teachers.

Dorrinson said that he was “cautiously optimistic” that the board’s latest action would serve as a model for other school districts across the country. “There isn’t a school in America whose problems couldn’t be solved by removing its students,” he said.

OT, I will wager you $1000. they don't read the federalist papers. Ya know what, I am my children's primary educator, and my kids read the federalist papers. I'm just curious what is keeping these kids from studying what they want? Nothing, thus this is a phony issue.

The courses he's talking about that are focused positively are "Advanced Placement" courses. Not many Liberals in those anyway. They would all be better off reading the Federalist Papers......................
