Mitt Romney and John McCain may be fighting for the front-runner mantle in the Republican presidential race, but it’s Texas Rep. Ron Paul who led the field in donor contributions last quarter, according to just-released campaign finance reports. On the back of two record-breaking days of online fundraising, Paul brought in $20 million during the October-through-December period, virtually all of it from individuals. That’s twice as much as either McCain or Romney collected from individuals in the same period — $7 million for McCain and $9 million for Romney.

Romney took in the most money overall for the fourth quarter by virtue of an $18 million loan from his personal funds. For Paul, the cash influx pushed his total receipts for the year to $28.2 million, with $7.8 million in spending money going into 2008.

Paul is likely to get another significant financial boost today, thanks to a supporter-driven fundraising initiative to honor the candidate’s 51st wedding anniversary and give him an edge going into the Super Tuesday primaries next week. This is just the latest in a series of “moneybombs” planned to demonstrate support for Paul; another is targeted for April 15, tax day.
