Limbaugh a spokesman for vegans? Say what?
By Drovers news staff | Friday, April 17, 2009

Several news organizations are reporting that Rush Limbaugh has recorded Public Service Announcements supporting the vegan-driven Humane Society of the United States. According to the Animal Agriculture Alliance, worse still is that one of the two audio spots promotes HSUS’ outreach to religious organizations.

One commentary by Wesley J. Smith, a senior fellow in bioethics, says Limbaugh supporting HSUS “is really against everything for which he stands.”

The Animal Agriculture Alliance has urged livestock producers to e-mail Rush today at [email protected] to urge him to further examine HSUS and reconsider his support of the organization. AAA also urges you to write your own letter expressing your feelings, but to get you started AAA has written a sample letter that is available here.

This is the email from BEEF Cow-Calf Weekly:

Rush Limbaugh Supports HSUS

Yes, you read the headline correctly. Rush Limbaugh, the bastion of conservative thinking in the U.S., has become a spokesman for the Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS).

The move didn’t go unnoticed by cattle folks. The Texas Cattle Feeders Association (TCFA) contacted its members, asking them to contact Limbaugh and explain HSUS’ true agenda. Here’s what TCFA said:

“Fans of Rush Limbaugh have been shocked to learn that he has become an advocate for HSUS. In fact, Rush has narrated two commercials on behalf of HSUS.

“To hear the audio of Rush's commercials supporting HSUS, click here: http://www.hsus.org/press_and_publications/press_releases/rush_limbaugh.

“Rush is probably like many supporters of HSUS – well-intentioned in wanting animals to be treated with compassion but uninformed about the organization's real mission. We hope you will send a message to Rush at: [email protected]

“Please feel free to use all or part of this sample message:

Rush,

Because we share many of the same conservative beliefs, I am very saddened to learn of your support for an organization that is working hard to put all cattlemen, including me, out of business. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has long pursued a goal of putting an end to all animal agriculture.

I know you believe in doing solid research. If you really check into what HSUS is up to, you will find that – despite having $200 million in assets – HSUS does not operate a single animal shelter nor provide financial support for local humane societies or shelters. HSUS is nothing other than a radical political organization determined to force all Americans to eat a vegan diet and forfeit the unique nutritional properties of beef.

Many well-intentioned people have been duped into donating their hard-earned dollars to HSUS because the drive-by media refuses to expose the truth about HSUS. I hope your show will become a place where people can get the facts about this organization's real agenda.”

Then why does Rush advertise and personally eat Allen Brother's steaks, Anal Tourette's? You can't tell the truth if your life depends on it.

Rush is a "cat person".....having no children of his own, he loves and adores his cats, and talks about them on the air quite a bit. Helluva big difference in wanting animals treated with love and kindness to being a vegan....Kinda like be a so-called sheriff of a podunk county who "imagines" he's in the loop with Jack Bauer and the rest of the Fed LEO's.

Calling Rush is one of the more rediculous things I've heard in a long time. The left just loves to take what he says out of context, yet another example.

In college, our Dairy Cattle Club went to Italy. We were looking over this Seawall down to a beach, probably 30 ft down. There was a cat down there soaking up some sun. A few guys from our group started trying to spit and hit the cat, then one tried dropping a rock or something, that set me off and I grabbed is the throat threating to throw him down there. His response was something like "dude, it's just a cat". That doesn't fly with me. Does that make me a Vegan?

Rush Limbaugh supports Humane Society of the United States with PSA recordings

Combative conservative talk-radio star Rush Limbaugh may not be a fan of squirrels, but he's working with the Humane Society of the United States to help other -- non-rodent -- animals through a series of public service announcements recently posted on the group's website.

Surprised? We were, too. After all, we're talking about the same man who introduced the topic of a squirrel-detonating device called the Rodenator thusly:

For you animal rights activists and lovers out there, I want you to try this on for size. This is a story from Spokane, Washington. They're having a problem with too many ground squirrels at the Finch Arboretum. I've never seen this word. A-r-b-o-r-e-t-u-m, what the hell is an arboretum? The name for a park, is that what it is? The Finch Arboretum. Okay.
Rodent-related feelings aside, it turns out Limbaugh has a beloved cat named Punkin and is supportive of animal welfare causes, including the Humane Society's anti-dogfighting campaign, which is the focus of one of the recorded spots. In another spot, he discusses the connection between religion and animals, reaching out to religious communities to promote the "faithful stewardship of animals."

"The animal protection movement should never confine itself to the Left or the Right in American politics. Opposition to cruelty and the embrace of the human-animal bond are universal values," Humane Society president and chief executive Wayne Pacelle writes on his blog. Pacelle says the Humane Society's aims are "in step with those of all good people" regardless of political persuasion, noting the group has received praise from pundits and columnists as ideologically diverse as conservative commentator George Will and New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof.

Not everyone seems as willing as Pacelle to accept Limbaugh into the fold, however. "If you love animals, you may shockingly have something in common with Rush Limbaugh. If you love humans too — don't worry, he's still your polar opposite," writes environmental blog Ecorazzi.

-I don't see anywhere where it says Rush is a vegan, only that he is against cruelty to animals. Aren't we all?

Coming from the Alabama KKK Grand Wizard-- and the type of person that believes in much of what I've despised and fought against all my life- that is a compliment...

I do know that when Rush lost all the weight many years back he credited it by "cutting way back on red meat." Now we know that the weight loss actually came from his hillbilly heroin addiction. When he got the cure he ballooned back up to bigger then ever.

Most likely the deal is that his love of cats clouded his judgement to the point he did not do the usual research which would have shown what HSUS actually does with their money.

An underwhelming 4% goes to do anything for animals, and that probably includes the cost of killing the thousands they euthanize because they do not want to spend what it costs to care for them and/or get them out to new pet owners.

Re. the dieting thing: did any of you listen to the guy? I happened to hear him expound on it one day recently. His belief and practice is that any weight loss diet works, and that he will lose the weight as quickly as he can, then spend the next year and a half or so have a great time putting it back on.

I do not agree with that philosophy and believe it to be detrimental to health, but if it works for him, that is niether anyone elses' problem nor business, IMO.

No one can deny that he stands up and fights for conservative causes and constitutional governance.

Re. the drug 'expose'.....I wonder how much was spent investigating and trying to end his career when they stumbled onto that problem???

I also wonder how many who criticize him (and many others) for getting hooked on a prescribed drug they have taken at their doctors direction use illegal recreational drugs, or even that legal drug, alcohol, to excess far too often for their own good or that of people who are affected by that illegal behavior.

Illegal recreational drug use is a very serious problem in this country, but how many celebrities and ordinary business people in our communities have been treated time after time and no one gives them any flak about it?

IMO, it's time to say one rehab time only, then you pay very severe penalties. The recreational illegal drug users in the USA are obviously funding illegal immigration and the drug murders on our southern border.

OT, the hateful, biased Kool-Aid drinker. We should all pity anyone that has to go before him when he pretends to be a judge!

mrj, the southern border can be shut down anytime we want it to be...it's not because of Washington...where the real problem is!
