"Some of the wealthiest Americans are African-American now."

Rush Limbaugh on Monday, April 28th, 2014 in comments on his radio show

Limbaugh: 'Some of the wealthiest Americans are African-American now'

False

There’s the truth, there’s distortions and then there’s Rush Limbaugh’s April 28, 2014, radio show. In it, the conservative American radio talk show host decided to discuss the racist comments allegedly made by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

At one point, Limbaugh described Sterling as "a typical Hollywood Democrat." That’s incorrect (Sterling is a registered Republican -- to the extent it matters).

"The only reason (Sterling’s) in trouble right now is he did not give enough money to Obama," Limbaugh proclaimed. That’s highly speculative, so we can’t fact-check Limbaugh on this point.

At another point in his Sterling talk, Limbaugh discussed how things generally are going for African-Americans in the United States. Limbaugh’s diagnosis: pretty darn good.

"You've got a black president. You've got a black attorney general. You've got the wealthiest TV performer in American history is a African-American woman. That would be The Oprah," Limbaugh said. "Some of the wealthiest Americans are African-American now."

That last line is quite incorrect.

The go-to source to learn about the wealthiest Americans is Forbes, which tracks the fortunes of the world’s elite. It publishes an annual list of the 400 wealthiest Americans and a list of the world’s billionaires. The most recent Forbes list was released in March 2014. (Bloomberg also publishes a less expansive list of the world’s billionaires.)

For some perspective, the folks at the bottom of Forbes’ wealthiest Americans list are worth an estimated $1.3 billion. At the top is Bill Gates, who is worth an estimated $72 billion.

How many African-Americans make up the American Top 400?

One, according to Forbes.

Oprah Winfrey is worth an estimated $2.9 billion -- ranking her 184th on the list.

For the record, it isn’t only rare for African-Americans to be billionaires in the United States. According to Forbes, there are only nine black billionaires in the world.

So who are the wealthiest African-Americans besides Winfrey? We found two other lists using Forbes data that are a few years old. Here’s a list, with the date of the last update:

Entertainer Sean "Diddy" Combs, $550 million (April 2012)

BET founder Robert Johnson, $550 million (May 2009)

Golfer Tiger Woods, $500 million (September 2010)

Former basketball player Michael Jordan, $500 million (September 2010)

Former basketball player Magic Johnson, $500 million (May 2009)

That means no African-American other than Oprah Winfrey is even close to cracking the Top 400 list.

Our ruling

Limbaugh said, "Some of the wealthiest Americans are African-American now."

We reached out to Limbaugh with our finding but have not heard back.

Of the top 400 wealthiest Americans, exactly one is African-American -- that’s .25 percent. Also, no other African-American is really all that close to breaking into the Top 400.

Limbaugh’s claim severely distorts reality. We rate it False.

I'd have to say that based on Old Imam's history of posts here that Mike is 100% correct.

The "richest in America", are those in the top 1%. I would have to guess that "SOME" of those people are African American.

OT, what % of the top 1%, are black, or minority?

Whatever % it is...would they be considered "SOME"?

I bet it would also be considered a part of the "Republican war on women", by OT, if Rush was to state that "Some of the wealthiest Americans are female now"

Why not post the numbers OT? And remember, 50% black, like obama, is now considered a minority.

Does Clinton still count?

Don't forget the movie stars and athletes OT?

We will await your list...

well here is an interesting lady.. like Oprah, she came from humble beginnings.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madam_C._J._Walker

"she said herself two years ago [in 1917] that she was not yet a millionaire, but hoped to be some time.

Madam C.J. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove, created specialized hair products and was the first American woman to become a millionaire through her own business.

I guess if you work hard enough you can overcome all the odds..

Is it uppity to assume that all here on this board would be aware of your business in the East and the West?

Is it uppity to not consider ones opinion valid on civil rights because they don't own a Ranch?

Curious minds would like to know.

What is Jay-Z and Beyonce's combined net worth? As of March, 2014, Beyonce and Jay-Z have a combined net worth of $900 million. Jay-Z's portion of their net worth is $500 million and Beyonce's is $350 million. That's easily enough to make them one of the top 10 richest celebrity couples in the world. As a matter of fact, when you remove famous women who happen to be dating not-so-famous billionaires like Salma Hayek and Francois-Henri Penault, Jay-Z and Beyonce are the #1 richest celebrity couple in the world ahead of couples like Tom Brady/Gisele Bundchen and David/Victoria Beckham. Jay and Bey are easily one of the highest earning couples in the world every year. In 2013 alone they earned a combined $95 million from record sales, touring, merchandise endorsements and more. When Jay performs, his concerts gross an estimated $1.5 million per night. When Beyonce tours, her concerts gross over $2 million. Beyonce and Jay-Z and one child together, a daughter named Blue Ivy Carter who was born on January 7th, 2013. They have houses all over the world and are even rumored to own an island in the Bahamas. When they are in the United States, The Carters can be found at a luxury apartment in New York City, a mansion in Westchester County, New York or a waterfront Villa in Miami.

So what is a millionaire considered according to OT? Are millionaires, whether in earnings, salary, or net worth no longer considered 'wealthy', 'rich', 'well to do', or simply among the 'needy' these days?

Wonder what the MEDIAN of top ten or twenty percent of our population in income/net worth would show in assets, and how the division between white and non-white races would be?

What other means would others suggest to show how well, or not so well, the 'racially handicapped' in the USA fares financially?

mrj- this isn't about what I consider a millionaire- as that is pretty open to perspective... This is about Rush saying blacks were among some of the "richest in America"... When in actuality in the 400 richest in America- only 1 is black... That doesn't seem to me or the authors of the article to be a very large "some"-- .25% :???:

As far as if you are considered wealthy with a million dollars- in my perspective if you receive a million $ a year earnings from your wage or business - you are quite well to do -- BUT if are a rancher/farmer or many other business's these days and your net worth is only a Million $ you may not be on the needy list but you are probably pretty low on the totem pole..

I can remember years ago- it was a big thing to fill out your paperwork at the bank and be able to show collateral/worth of a Million $... Today many take that amount and/or several times that amount every year as their "operating loans"...

"Some of the wealthiest Americans are African-American now."

"Some" is used synonymously as an undetermined/unknown number of people. He gave no numbers nor percentages.

"Wealthiest" could be any percentage of American people. Top 1%?, Top 10%?, or Top 50%? - No one knows what he meant.

By giving "Some" Blacks credit for being wealthy Rush is stirring up people?

Hardly. Like I said before, you are the only one stirred up.

Are you really as stupid as you seem?

OT, how many people in the top 1%? Wealth wise, not income, but wealth?

Only 400? And then MRJ is correct...

Can you tell us what Rush considers "wealthy"?

You would have to know his opinion, before determining if he is correct, or not.

So, define wealthy, and we'll have a starting point...if not, then once again, you are full of hot air.
