Russia widens U.S. meat ban due to swine flu 28 Apr 2009 12:02:43 GMT

MOSCOW, April 28 (Reuters) - Russia has extended its ban on raw meat imports caused by the outbreak of swine flu to the U.S. states of New York and Ohio, the country's animal and plant health body Rosselkhoznadzor said on Tuesday.

The ban will also apply to all raw and cooked meat products which could be carried in the personal luggage of passengers and crew, as well as to food served on board of airplanes and ships which had stopped in the two states, it said in a statement.

Russia's top veterinarian said on Monday that the country, which had banned meat imports from some countries hit by the virus, including from top poultry meat supplier, the United States, could introduce new bans depending on the disease spread. [ID:nLR547374]

From last Sunday, the ban applied to all types of meat from Mexico and the states of Texas, California and Kansas, and to raw pork from Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Florida, countries of Central America and the Caribbean.

Confirmed outbreaks of swine flu in Mexico, where it has killed 149 people, the United States, Canada and Europe have prompted health authorities to put customs officers on alert. [ID:nN27484099]

Cases of the flu, which has components of classic avian, human and swine flu viruses but has not actually been seen in pigs, were also suspected in France, Italy and Israel. (Reporting by Aleksandras Budrys, Editing by Peter Blackburn)

That's just plain silly. Flu can not be transmitted by meat. It just doesn't work that way.

If the ban on the transport of meat due to flu in pigs was legitimate, then there would not have been an ounce of pork exported anywhere in the world.... ever. In the history of the world. Pigs get flu all the time.

The world is full of genius's .

Did you hear about Egypt and the mass slaughter of pigs that was issued in that country to prevent the spread of the influenza ?

And they wonder why their countries are full of neanderthals. :dunce:

(this is only a part of the report)

CARACAS, Venezuela — The government of Cuba suspended flights to and from Mexico for 48 hours, Russia banned imported pork from at least 11 U.S. states and medical help lines in Europe were inundated, as the world reacted apprehensively Tuesday to the swine flu outbreak.

Going beyond pork, Russia prohibited imports of all raw meat from Mexico as well as from California, Texas and Kansas. Health officials said, however, that there's no link between eating any kind of meat and being infected with swine flu.

European government officials attempted to express concern without stoking panic. The European Union's health minister had to backtrack after suggesting Monday that Europeans should avoid traveling to the United States and Mexico.

The World Health Organization has said the epidemic isn't serious enough yet to clamp down on traveling from one country to another.

That didn't stop Cuba from becoming the first country to halt air traffic with Mexico.

Israel's deputy health minister irked some Mexican leaders by trying to label the cause of the outbreak the "Mexican flu" instead of the "swine flu." The change would have allowed strict religious Jews from having to utter the word of an animal that's considered dirty and nonkosher.

Nicaragua prohibited imports of live pigs from Mexico.

Nicaragua's health minister, Guillermo Gonzalez, declared a national emergency and announced plans to train 35,000 teachers and student volunteers to detect the virus throughout the country.

n Bogota, Colombia, pork consumption has declined even though health authorities say it presents no risk.

I rather doubt that the USA will stop importing double of what they export (unless Americans rise up and pressure their congressional leaders which needs to be done on a grand scale) so look for pork and beef prices to drop significantly.

I do not mean they will drop in the store, the producer will take serious cuts from this.
