Ryan: Marijuana Legalization Up To "States"

In an interview with Colorado station KRDO-TV, Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan says he believes it's up to the states to decide whether to legalize medical marijuana.

"My personal position on these issues has been let the states decide what they want to do with these things," he explains. "This is something that is not a high priority of ours."

It may be a state's issue but the interstate traffic of narcotics is still a federal issue.

Colorado's medical marijuana has become more of a de-facto legalization, with all the deleterious social & criminal problems exacerbated by the increased demand for the drug. Locally here we've had increased grow operations both legal and illegal resulting in a couple fires. One sending a 21 year old woman to the burn unit, whom later died from her injuries.

In the aftermath of the Waldo Canyon fire... there was a 40+ acre grow operation, cartel run, discovered in the forest approximate to the fire's origin. It will be interesting to find out, when the investigation is finished, if that was the source of the fire.

if the federal government was smart... they could solve the interstate issue like they do with any other potentially dangerous cargo..

place a tax on the product,.. require the company driver, truck and cargo to be inspected, and bonded for loss, and recovery. and have a permit per load charge..

handled properly De-crimilization could work out fro the public and make our world safer.

require growers, transporters, distributors to safeguard their product,.. pay a hefty tax, and permit fees.. make sure the product is tested, inspected and labeled at the "industries" cost..

front load the regulatory cost upfront so it is comparable to on street costs and allow the legal market that can cut costs eliminate the black-market cartels

cause like it or not what we are doing isn't working..

AMEN- Nixon declared the "war on drugs" in 1972-- and every year we are losing that war more... And the organized crime and drug cartels are getting richer and stronger and moving into every portion of illegal activities and government... I read an article the other day that claims Mexican drug cartels now control the major portion of identity/credit card theft in the US...
We have lost the "war on drugs"....

I agree- legalize it- take away the huge profit incentive the crooks have because it is an illicit product - tax it- use those tax dollars for antidrug education and treatment...

Acually Nixon declared a "War On Drug Abuse". Big, big, BIG difference......

You must be in senility. It's been a long time since you got a fact straight.

Try thinking before you type, if at all possible.

I know, why don't you associate M-COOL with NAFTA?
