Salmonella found in curly spinach
The Hamilton Spectator
BURLINGTON (Dec 12, 2006)
Salmonella bacteria has been found in a brand of spinach packaged by Ippolito Produce.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public about the spinach, grown in Texas and distributed only in the Atlantic provinces. The Queen Victoria brand curly spinach was sold in 10 oz./284 g packages with a best-before date of Dec. 7 and the UPC code 0 33383 65201 6.
Hugh Bowman, general manager of Ippolito Produce, is mystified about where the salmonella contamination came from. He said his company tested the raw product when it arrived and re-tested it after it had been packaged. The tests were negative, but a package pulled off a store shelf came back positive. Bowman stressed that no illness has been reported. The company issued a voluntary recall.
It's unlikely any of the product is still in stores, but some consumers may have it in their fridges. The alert does not affect Queen Victoria brand baby spinach, which is more popular in salads. For more information, call 1-800-442-2342 or visit www.inspection.gc.ca.
PS.Bill ,We arrived just fine in Florida and my wireless laptop says you have made some comments that I need to answer to. 71 degrees Outside of Mayo Fl. Hope your weather improves. Bill , Don't eat the Spinach unless you have traceback!
