Senate Votes to End Tax Breaks for Rich

July 25, 2012

The Senate on Wednesday voted 51 to 48 to extend tax cuts for most working Americans and end Bush-era tax breaks in 2013 for individuals making more than $200,000 a year and couples earning at least $250,000. "With a $16 trillion national debt and a $1 trillion deficit, we cannot continue to give tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires," Sen. Bernie Sanders said after the vote. "This is a step forward in ending the Bush-era tax breaks for the rich and asking the wealthiest Americans, who are doing phenomenally well, to do their fair share to bring down deficits. I hope our Republican friends in the House can overcome their support for tax breaks for the wealthy and support this common-sense approach to cutting deficits."

The proposal tax cuts that the Senate are worth $1,600 to the average family.

The bill also extends other tax provisions critical to the middle class - the American Opportunity Tax Credit, the expanded Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit - that help families afford college, cover their bills and provide for their children.

The American Opportunity Tax Credit helps middle-class families afford college by covering up to $2,500 of the cost of tuition.

The Child Tax Credit provides hard-working families with $1,000 worth of tax relief for each child under age 17.

The Earned Income Tax Credit is a refundable credit that offers assistance to working individuals and families who earned less than $49,078 in 2011.

Not surprising. Bernie is a "Socialist".

In Vermont, Bernie Sanders to become the country's first self-described socialist to be elected to the U.S. Senate. Running as an independent, Sanders won 65% of the vote, easily beating his opponent Rich Tarrant. We speak with Sanders about what it means to the country's first socialist senator.

In the perfect Socialist world everyone except the elite make the same amount of money. That is his goal....................... to take away the successful's incentive to make above average.

WASHINGTON—Democrats pushed a yearlong extension of tax cuts

Senators approved the Democratic bill by a near party-line 51-48 vote, with Vice President Joe Biden presiding over the chamber in case his vote was needed to break a tie. Minutes earlier, lawmakers voted 54-45 to kill a rival Republican package that would have included the best-off in the tax reductions.

The $250 billion Democratic measure would extend tax cuts in 2013 for millions of Americans that otherwise would expire in January. But it would deny those reductions to the earnings of individuals exceeding $200,000 yearly and of couples surpassing $250,000.

if the tax measure is what is needed then why make it only an extension.. why not make it permanent tax law?

this extension crap is nothing but a political football.. and shows how little the democrats actually care about the middle and working class..

so a new tax on millions of small business owners. That should help the economy.

both the fact that the tax cut is not an actual cut but is just another extension coupled with the huge tax increase on higher earners will hurt the economy..

add in the military cuts looming and our economy is bound to tank in late 2012 and early 2013....

who will Obama blame then?

They will extend with the hope that obama and the Dems. win the election and then...they will tax everyone more.

tax them more is the wrong terminology,..

the liberal democrats will let the Bush tax cuts expire...

which may result in everyone paying more taxes, but it would be Bush's fault..

they will let them expire and then soon after raise them further.

So we have gone back to $1000 per child...
EIC is NOT for individuals only "families" you have to have a dependent to claim it.
Tax breaks like these will not be for the small business owner, I wonder how many job losses there will be? Yeah I work for a multi million company ....geeee have worked there for over 3 years there has not been a raise since way before I started. Healthcare cost is getting higher. We use to have 3 awesome staff appreciation "parties" now they are just bare bones.
Please tell me how taxing the rich will not effect "working" people.
I am sure I could think of more but I need my coffee and wake up a bit more.

WTF? Is this some sort of an explanation for a Socialist to want to increase taxes on the higher paying taxpayers?

maybe he is trying to point out that liberals such as Day O'Conner are failing to understand our Constitution.. and missing the spirit of the Declaration of Independence..

how else could you explain liberals incessant need to carve our nation into small groups separated by imagined barriers?
