U.S. will work to rebuild Georgia: Kimmitt
Tue Aug 19, 2008 1:57pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States and its allies will work to provide Georgia with humanitarian aid and longer-term reconstruction aid in the wake of its conflict with Russia, a senior U.S. Treasury official said on Tuesday.

Deputy Treasury Secretary Robert Kimmitt told CNBC Television that Georgia's economy would recover from the Russian invasion and urged Russia to reopen communication and transport links in the war-torn country.

"They're going to come through with a commitment to economic reform," Kimmitt said of Georgia. "We and our international partners are going to do all that we can in the near term on humanitarian assistance and in the long term on reconstruction assistance."

The Treasury has been working with the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to support reforms made by Georgia and ensure its economic changes continue.

All three institutions said last week they stood ready to help Georgia's government, which they said had acted to tackle corruption, quicken privatization and create a business-friendly environment that boosted capital flows.

Biden calls for $1 billion in emergency aid to Georgia

Fresh off a trip to the Republic of Georgia, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joe Biden said he will ask for $1 billion in emergency aid for the war torn country.

Biden, who is rumored to be very high on Sen. Barack Obama’s list of running mates, met with Georgia's president and prime minister on the trip, further burnishing his foreign policy credentials ahead of Obama’s decision.

“I left the country convinced that Russia's invasion of Georgia may be the one of the most significant event to occur in Europe since the end of communism,” said Biden.

“When Congress reconvenes, I intend to work with the administration to seek Congressional approval for $1 billion in emergency assistance for Georgia, with a substantial down payment on that aid to be included in the Congress' next supplemental spending bill.”

While the Russian government has claimed that the Georgian military was engaged in a “genocide” in the region of South Ossetia, Biden said he did not see any evidence of it on his trip.

Biden said the $1 billion would "help the people of Georgia to rebuild their country and preserve its democratic institutions."

The senator also issued a terse warning to the former Soviet Union, saying that “Russia’s actions in Georgia will have consequences.”

The Dems have every chance they wanted to stop funding Iraq and have not.

When your Grandaughters start wearing those burkhas, maybe the Iraqis will be gentle with them, since we gave them the handouts?

Iraq didn't attack us- and according to the National Intelligence Report "posed no threat to the US"...But Bush censored and deleted that portion- and much more- from the copy of that report that he gave to Congress... I thought you folks were against censorship and deleting :???:

I thought you were against the war? If so.......why did you keep funding it?

Muslim Jihadist Radicals attacked us. Whether they are from Iraq, Billings, MT, or Hawaii, they have the same intent and must be stopped wherever they are from.

Are you telling me there were never Muslim Radical Jihadists in Iraq?

When we had the info that we believed was true- I supported the war...Now that the evidence is showing that we were given false and untrue info by the Administration (some of which was purposely altered)- I can see where it was not justified for the reasons given-unnecessary- and definitely not well planned or orchestrated- nor worth the cost in lives, Trillions of dollars, or the loss of all the moral and political standing in the world we had....

And actually most of the reports coming out from the Generals, former intelligence folks, and diplomats testifying in Congress- they now say NO on the Al Quaeda and the Jihadists - not until the US ran Saddam out as he wouldn't allow them- because they were a threat to his power- and the Bathist regime... There is tho evidence that Saddam did fund some of the Palistinian groups and suicide bombers that were attacking Israel....

I watched Colin Powell the other day in an interview that said - even tho he had been given false info too- he thought Bush's invasion policy was so wrong that he asked Bush for a 3 hour set down meeting with him- but unfortunately was not able to override the neocon Cheney/Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz views that Bush had accepted....

But as came out in the hearings- we were falsely deceived when Bush said the country of Iraq posed a direct threat to the US...Saudi Arabia's support of the jihadists posed/poses a greater threat to the U.S as far as the radical Muslims go....

And as far as the radical Muslims go- where do we stop with attacking countries that have radical Muslims in them...Do we attack and occupy every mideast country :???: all the northern African countries :???: Malaysia :???: Pakistan :???: Britain :???: Germany :???: Canada :???: Do we bomb Detroit off the face of the earth :???:

Invasion and conquest of countries is not the way to defeat the Muslim Jihadist- in fact it does the opposite and promotes their cause and spawns more radicals...This is one of the main reasons the Iraqis have said they now are asking for the removal of foreign troops from their country...

I'll be for whatever it takes to keep my grandkids safe from Radical Muslim Jihadists. Kill them wherever they are plotting against us, which is everywhere they reside.

Even if I have to live in a tent. I'd go in a heartbeat.

I may be a lot of things.............but I'm no coward like some here are.

You cannot tell me that killing a sumbitch won't keep them from harming my grandkids. No way. Go tell that crap to someone else.

Hmmm, is this the earliest date you started with that lie? You're living proof that if you repeat a lie often enough, you begin to believe it yourself.

Fool.
