Anyone who wants to know the FACTS about SD Cattlemen and their issues/activities can tune in right now, to radio KBHB, 810 on your dial.

Or check their website for the Chasein Ag show to listen over the internet. Pres. Scott Jones told the facts of the dispute with SOME MEMBERS of the Coteau Hills affilate which left the state org/

"SOME MEMBERS"? 80% is "some"? Looks to me that it was "MOST MEMBERS".

Sandhusker, you and I disagree on the value of polls, however there was NO vote of the members of that affiliate, only a poll, then the board of directors made the decision without giving the members a chance to vote on it. Do you know what information those members were given by their board of directors? I don't. Nor do I know how many members joined the group because it is common for some ag organizations fo provide free suppers, entertainment, etc. for members. SDCA is an issue focused organization and most members espect their dues plus a lot of their personal effort and their own money into addressing those issues, not expecting perks.

BTW, the differences were due to the fact that a member of that affiliate, who had been a state officer, was not elected again by the state membership during the annual meeting held last November in the local area town of the Coteau Hills membership. Having maybe 200 members, only about 12 chose to show up at the meeting, which they had the time and opportunity to do, if they so chose. Their members and directors knew they could have easily outvoted the members from other areas of the state in attendance as it was located in the northeast corner of the state, and elected their member, had they chosen to come to the reasonably nearby meeting. The weather was bad to the south and east, where the population is quite high, so some members of other affiliates planning to attend were unable to do so.

It clearly was an internal, local personality issue, having nothing to do with policy issues of SDCA or NCBA. Time will tell if his fellow members choose to stay with him, or remain with the state association. There was no problem with any other of the SDCA state affiliates, and that should tell you something about the situation.

“Leadership of the Coteau Hills Cattlemen and SDCA have a philosophical difference for some time about what the role of SDCA should be and how to best achieve the goals of the association"

That doesn't sound to me like it was just about one member not getting a state office.

mrj, I bet those members don't need to be told by their leadership anything other than---- stay tuned to ranchers.net and watch mrj sell out producer interests to packer interests time and time again. You find out the philosophical differences between producers and packers right here.

Sandhusker, you are attempting to make a mountain out of a mole hill. That just doesn't work very well with the shifting sand of nonexistant issues!

Yes, it is sad that what are essentially minor differences of opinion can harm an organization. And it seems rather sick that some people will try to spin and blow such differences out of proportion in order to harm an organization with which they have no connection, whatever.

I personally believe the majority of members of Coteau Hills will remain with SDCA because they are responsible, dedicated cattle producers and can see the value of participating in a good state cattle producer organization.

The differences were NOT on policy issues, but things like duties of staff, some free events or meals and other 'fun' things for members, and very likely could have been solved, given a bit more time and information reaching a majority of the members of Coteau Hills membership. SDCA simply does not have the funds or staff enough to handle that sort of perks for members. The majority of members, statewide, want the focus to be on cattle business related policy issues. End of story.
