All these lil white face babies are outta mama's that look like this. I think this is his only herd of Bramers. His replacement heifers all come from this pasture. He really likes them F-1s.

I"m not really mowin the grass....got that shredder raised up, and I'm just gittin the tall weeds that's there. The only grass I do get is that ole smut grass, the tops. They don't eat that part anyway...but they will eat on the bottom...it's still green some.
Most of that place is covered in coastal, except for right up around the creeks, and all the sloughs. And I totally agree...put out a lick, and let em eat. He has the lick tubs out. But hasn't put any hay out.

We've started puttin hay out for ours. But not a whole lot. Bout time to be full time hayin, as ours have just about ate all the old dried grass there is.

Not real sure what Santa is brangin me (I didnt send him a letter, and I aint sat on his lap this year).......I have been too busy to find any time to be bad....so it must be somethin good LOL

I have family that live in OK and AR that mow pastures. When I was a kid, I really thought that was a waste of grass! :???: We don't have to worry about our grass getting rank here, just getting grass! It is interesting to visit ranches in different areas and see the management, even if it is via internet. Thanks, and keep yer eye peeled :D

The main reason for shreddin pastures aint to cut grass...it's for weed control. This man normally sprays for weeds on most of his pastures. But his weed sprayer has been down for two seasons, and he's not been able to spray. Plus...he says the weeds that I"m cuttin, you can't hardly kill with any type spray. I don't know what kinda weed they are....they'll choke you to the point of not bein able to breath if you cut at a certain time when they are bloomin and makin pollen. Thank goodness we don't have this type of weed in our pasture. THe seeds almost look like mustard seeds...and the stems are real woody.
Here usually shreddin is done in early summer. that way you've knocked down the biggest majority of the weeds that really come on and take hold in the later part of the summer. So that they aren't competin with the grass for what rain we do get later in the year. Makes a big difference if you shred once or twice a year in the ammount of grass and the lack of weeds you'll have. Durin and after a drought the weeds are always alot worse than any other time, and we've had really dry summers the last 2 years....year before last was dry all year long. So we are all fightin weeds now.
Always amazes me when I look at photos from up north....like Soapweeds or Jassys....they don't have weeds. (other than sunflowers LOL) their pastures, (or meadows as they call em)....are just filled with grass. And I have never heard either one of them mention mowin pastures for weed control. We also disk our pastures in the spring. Loosens up the dirt, and lets the grass really take off and thicken up. Then come back in a couple months later and shred.
He runs 2000 mama cows and only has two guys that work the ranch. That's alot for those two fellas to get done. Specially with all the hay they made this year LOL. They were still movin bales out of the fields a month ago.
I too find it so interestin to see how other folks do things all over the country. This site is great for that reason alone, not to mention all the great folks on here.

Although there are weeds in a natural grass pasture the grass is hardier it tends to take over any bad weeds, guess its kinda a strong weed itself. Our pasture is all native grass,we have different wild flowers in it but cattle seem to know what and what not to eat.

You can see why we get a few baby deer every year when they hide in five feet high crops

I honestly couldn't tell you when the last time I heard anyone say anything about a "native grass" pasture around here....if ever. Most of this country was clear cut back in the late 1800s, early 1900s. Then cotton farmed, or corn for years. Up until about the 50s or so. Then put into pastures.

We here in the sandhills do have the native grasses that grow...I think most of the weeds that grow here are in my flowerbeds!!! With the mowing hay and grazing program, the weeds don't seem to get out of control around here,,,but we've got em. I told hubby you were STILL mowing weeds...as he puts on his overshoes, coveralls, and other winter gear...lol he just rolls his eyes.

I know about them babies hiding in the grass and won't move...I hate even driving my pickup around in the fall when we have the new babies all nestled down in the grass...they are hard to see...I did run over a baby several years ago that I didn't see...I cried the rest of the day...so I try to be careful like you do... One of our guys baled a baby fawn this last yr that was all nestled down in the windrow...just hate that...but it happens.

You'd better take time off that tractor come christmas morning lilly or Santa won't be able to keep up with ya and find ya!

I am OFF the tractor till after the holidays!!!!

I told Mr Lilly that if I were to run over one, I'd bawl like a baby. I would just feel terrible. Told the fella that I"m shreddin for that I was really bein careful....he said, "oh I've run over em before" like it does "just happen" and I know it could. But I sure don't want it to. So I'm goin extra slow....and keepin my eye peeled like a hawk.

You tell him..." don't you roll them eyes" LOL

With the weed pressure here I try to clip the pastures three times a year. I try to clip the day after I have moved the cattle to a new lot.

One of the neighbors borrowed my bat wing bush hog about 25 years ago when they ( big bush hogs ) were new to the area and he killed three calves in one day. I told him the first one could be understood but not the other two. He then moved the cattle to the next lot and finished cliping.

If things work right I am planning to trade for a 24' bat wing this year. It seems time is always short and you can't find anyone willing to work any more.

The high school kids are so used to their parents working in factories and giving them anything they want that you can't get them to even drive an airconditioned tractor for less than $11.00 per hour. Then they willcry like babies if the CD player skips.
