Selling Calves Early

Strong Market For Fall Delivered Calves

This week some very strong prices were seen for yearling cattle and even fall delivered calves.

The Public Auction Yards in Billings, Montana sold several nice strings of 750-785 pound steers for $114-116 plus some 935 pound steers for $111.60.

The Northern Livestock Video Auction held their May internet sale which featured over 3,600 head. Trade was moderate to active on moderate to good demand. The highlight was news that some calves sold for 2010 fall delivery.

Over 120 head of 500 pound steers sold for $129.50 for October delivery with some 590 pound steers selling for $117 for October-November delivery.

We had an open cow that was thin last fall so we kept her. Took her
to Lemmon Livestock last Wednesday. She weighed 1570# (butterball
fat on grass hay)and brought $65. $1020!!
I'm kind of embarrassed at her weight but she was open
all winter. She was 10 years old.

I'm so happy for everyone that has gotten in on this good
cull cow and bull and yearling market. I hope it lasts!

true story....about 5-6 years ago i took a cow to Belle Fourche, she weighed 2055  . i stayed around to watch her sell, but sat very low in my seat  . i was so embarrassed i didn't want anyone to see me unload her. i remember she walked in the ring and Lynn Weishaar says jokingly, "bull buyers, you're up." :D

To tell the truth, Justin, years ago we had a cow that lost her
calf due to nitrates. I didn't feel it was her fault and insisted on
keeping her. We ran her all summer and that fall she was open. We sold her, and she too, weighed close to 2000#.  That scared the heck out of me, and that's when I went on the kick for moderation.
I thought if that cow had the genetics to weigh like that,
so did some others. YIKES.

Cowboyup-- I missed all the calves selling and didn't get back til they were selling old cows/prs (several of which of those were No/Saling)...

How was the calf market? I've seen some of these early salestop the market for the year....

I sold my steers 580 lbs nov delivery for 116.50 and the hfrs at 550 lbs for 1.08. quite a few lots were pulled but I was about the first up with fall delivery so just had to take a chance. It was alot better than I did last year and so I am pretty happy. Thought the hfrs could have done a little better but the prices overall were about what everyone I talked to expected.

I took 6 cows to Williams Lake on Thursday.

2 fat cows 1193 @ .5975

2 medium flesh 1055 @ .5250

2 old crocks that were
in decent flesh but not
exportable 1055 @ .44

The last cow I sold for 60 cents was on May 7 2003.

I sold a load of steer calves a few weeks ago for nov delivery (weaned) steers @ 600 for 123.50 and a load of hfrs @ 575 for 116.50. most i have ever sold calves for, I am very pleased.
