Nice set of steers Soap, they will ring a bell.

That is one job that is not essential up here if we are selling calves. Until the value of pre-vac is recognized and paid for by the feeders it is not worth the expense.

That is the way it used to be here, but it sure pays to vaccinate anymore. Most order buyers won't even bid on calves if they haven't had their shots. We are on the Pfizer Selectvac program.

So far we've been told that they sure appreciate when it's done but since most of the lots treat all incoming the same regardless, they aren't paying for it.
The last two years we have given a 5 way and an 8 way at branding to help out if we background and we have the cow herd on a good program.
Our cattle sell well so I guess we are doing something right.
This calf market is too high to hold many more than replacements this year. We will collect the profit while it's real.

soggy set of steers, Soapweed. :D are you still using implants?

 Yes, until they pay me real well not to, I suppose we will keep on doing it. More pounds, more profit.

We have given all our calves Synovex-C at branding time for the past 30 years, even the heifers we keep as replacements. It hasn't affected their fertility. This is the only implant we give, and we don't give another implant at pre-conditioning time. There is no health risk with implants, and a head of cabbage contains far more hormones.

Back in my scaling everything every chance I could days I did a little made at home implant trial-I implanted all the even numbered steers. That year I think we got an extra 15 pounds-those were pretty growthy CharX calves. I haven't done it for years as were in a bit of a different marketing situation now.

In a test a neighbor ran more than thirty years ago, calves were divided into four groups. The group getting Synovex-C gained 26 extra pounds, those receiving Ralgro gained 16 pounds, and the group that got Compudose gained eight pounds over the "control group" which didn't get any implants. For an "investment" of from 75 cents to one dollar per dose of implant, that is a fairly significant return on investment for extra pounds gained, not to mention the feed efficiency that occurs. Yes, I realize there is money to be gained from going the all natural route, but so far for our operation it still pays to implant. I will change when the winds of fortune blow a different direction.

I sold a load of calves on Superior back in 1998, October 3rd to be exact. They brought $79.00 per cwt at the time on 600 pounds pay weight. In three weeks when they were delivered, had I have taken them to the sale barn then, they would have brought $85.00 per cwt. I have a knack of doing things with poor timing. :?
