what shots are you giving?

We are on the Pfizer Selectvac program and are giving Bovi-Shield GOLD 5, Ultrabac 7/Somubac, One Shot (Pasteurella), and injectable Dectomax. It seems like the buyers won't bid unless calves get their fall immunizations.

i agree with you 100%. well worth the effort in my opinion. it has been proven to many times.

I agree 100% on the fall shots. I don't believe buyers give extra for giving shots. They just don't dock you for not giving shots. :???:

My calves got Pyramid 5 + Presponse SQ (Fort Dodge) and Vision 7/Somnus (Intervet) along with generic pour-on ivermectin (Ivermax) I have never used Dectomax, pour-on or injectable.

Does Dectomax have an advantage over ivermectin products besides qualifying for the Pfizer product program? I have used generic ivermectin pour-on for a long time and am considering perhaps I should use a different product to avoid building resistance.

I think it's too late, John. My sources plus what I have been reading
in the industy papers tell me that the resistance to all avermectin
pour-on products is already happening. The best way to deworm is to use
the injectable, like Soapweed did, or use Safeguard as a drench
or in mineral. Of the avermectins, I have listened to Dr. Don Bliss and
he has said Dectomax is the best of the bunch; in his opinion. Cydectin
is the worst.

I've also heard that deworming calves now benefits the buyer more
than the seller. But that almost would be a value-added benefit to
the calves offered for sale, woudn't it? And those calves might
bring a higher price over calves that weren't dewormed.

I do know that if you deworm your cows too early and we get a fall
with moisture and warm temperatures that the cattle will get re-infested.
(Temperature+moisture propogates worms.) We deworm ours in December with Safeguard in the mineral.
We think that has worked exceptionally well.
Don't have to get them back in to deworm them
and there is a lot less chance of them being reinfested going into winter
when dewormed late. Many ranchers around here have been doing
this and are pleased.

FWIW~

Thank you for the reply, FH! I don't dispute any part of what you wrote. 8)

Probably the most reliable way to determine the worm load in a cattle herd would be to send in a representative fecal sample to be tested. I've never done that. Before worming became fashionable, vets used to say that worms weren't a big problem in arid western SD. Now they sell us a lot of different worming products.

It seems to me that the pour-on ivermectin products still do a satisfactory job on external parasites like flies and lice. I don't know about the internal stuff.
