Fall has definately arrive out west too. 28* F this mornin' headed to work at 5 a.m. The cows look fine as always. Pretty fancy openin' a wire gate a horseback Kosmo! Don't know about the rest of ya but shipping weaned calves is always a happy and sad time for me. You remember all the cold calving nights but the bucking and kicking morning's too. Hope they weigh up good Soap and they have to pay ya in Gold Bars!

I sure enjoy your pictures Soapweed. How many mobs do you have your herd split into?

Thanks, folks. It is always fun taking photos. Hope you don't get bored with them.

Our pairs are running in nine different bunches. Is that the same as a "mob"?

Yep, I like the Aussie term mob. I call those straw piles my combine leaves behind bunches. :)

Sometimes it's hard enough to ketchup with them, let alone mustarding them, too.

Isn't English grand. I would love to muster with a J 3 Cub or a Helicopter. Afraid my ranch isn't quite big enough.

Soapweed, this city slicker enjoys your pictures. Seeing the crew bundled up today, ugh, summer is over with, well that is what little summer the Midwest had this year.

What are you guys complaining about? - you had rain didn't you? :?
That would sure have made a lot of peoples summer up here. We were -7C on Monday morning in this old frost trap but it got up to 26C today and they are predicting higher for tomorrow. Exceptionally hot for the time of year.
Great pictures Soapweed, I never tire of looking at your scenery.

We have received about three or four tenths of an inch of rain out of this deal. The last significant rain we had was over five weeks ago. Working cattle last week was quite warm, dry, and dusty. It was sure nicer putting cattle through the corrals today after the rain had settled the dust.

Oh, I meant generally over the whole summer you have received more rain than usual which must be nice.
I'm negotiating with a guy an hour away from me to possibly fall pasture/custom feed or buy some of his cows as they are out of grass now and have no hay. They got only 4'' of rain from spring until now where they usually would get 12-14''. They have been grazing the roadside ditches for the last week. It's been a tough stretch up here for some of these guys - dismal, below cost of production calf prices last fall, a long tough winter followed by record drought and feed prices through the roof. They now have to decide whether to cut their losses and sell into a market where prices for bred cows will be at cull rates or whether they continue for another year and try and buy feed. Lots of despondency to be seen, that's why I thought you folks that had the better than average rains shouldn't be complaining because its getting a little cool  :)

The cool brisk wind is actually quite refreshing. It's just that September seems a bit early to have to wear a cap with the ear flappers down.

I sure feel for those that didn't get much rain this summer. It is a tough situation, and one that I've experienced also on several different years throughout my lifetime. It is a case of grab on for a better hold to ride things out until conditions change in a positive direction. Unfortunately, sometimes this takes quite awhile.

Kind of like May 16th being a little late to be wearing wool pants and insulated boots for a branding.

Thanks again for sharing your day Soapweed.

Thanks for the pictures Soap. We never get tired of looking at someone else's operation. We were up in your country last weekend but didn't know quite where you lived. It was a quick trip, but maybe someday we can get together. I,d like to see your operation up close! RBT
