Sgt. Lashley's Letter To Prof. Gates: I Am Not An Uncle Tom

Dear Jim,

Would you be so kind as to mention the following to Mr. Gates and President Obama during your meeting with them:

One of the major problems stemming from the events of July 16 is that I, now known as 'the black Sergeant', have had my image plastered all over the Internet, television and newspapers. Subsequently, I have also become known, at least to some, as an 'Uncle Tom.'

I'm forced to ponder the notion that as a result of speaking the truth and coming to the defense of a friend and collegue, who just happens to be white, that I have somehow betrayed my heritage.

Please convey my concerns to the President that Mr. Gates' actions may have caused grave and potentially irreparable harm to the struggle for racial harmony in this country and perhaps throughout the world.

In closing, I would simply like to ask that Mr. Gates deeply reflect on the events that have unfolded since July 16 and ask himself the following questions:

'What can I do to help heal the rift caused by some of my actions?; What responsibility do I bear for what occurred on July 16, 2009? Is there anything I can do to mitigate the damage done to the reputations of two respected Police Officers?'

Thank you in advance,

Your friend,

Leon K. Lashley

I thought Obama was going to be a race uniter? What happened to that? Could it be that those of us who tabbed him a racist last summer were correct?

This isn't about me, it's about Barak Obama. He's the racist here.

That's the problem Reader. It's not going away.

Have you noticed the racist label more freely being tossed around since this incident.

It was going on here in PB long before the Gates ordeal.

It is quite obvious if you do not agree with Obama, your are labelled a racist.

look at how the MSM tried to justify Obama's statement.

R2, so what your saying is,.. that those who waited for the facts before they decided what really happened, should now let the media (and Obama) "off the hook" and forget the real teachable moment?

so much for accountability..   :!:

I'm with Steve, this shouldn't be conviently swept under the rug just because Obama showed a part of his soul that is objectionable. There is a teaching moment and everybody should get the lesson.

We can learn that there are people who cry wolf when it comes to racism.

We learn that Barak Obama is the type of person that you should expect him to be after reading his comments on white people in his books and after he chose Jeramiah Wright as his "pastor" for 20 years.

We also can learn that there are people in this country that would make an excuse for Obama even if he were to eat a live kitten.

Reader, "We don't know who pushed whose button and why or what they ate or whose wife yelled at them that day or who had had no sleep or who was having a testosterone surge for whatever reason."

"I was grumpy" is no defense that a judge will buy.

You're labeled a racist if you tell racist jokes or use racist terms to refer to people of other ethnic or racial backgrounds. Like Buckwheat, Sasquatch, African lion, spade, etc.

Demeaning, pejorative terms applied to people that malign them due to their race or facial features, etc.

Similar with gender and frankly with other highly personal insults about people's religion. The Michelle Malkin post...

I haven't made a stink about having a poster whose tagline refers to me as "Miss Piggy" because it reflects worse on them than on me but I will object over and over to frequent posters here who use racially charged terms like Buckwheat.
Reader think about Miss Piggy...who is the star? Who is the prettest? Who does everyone know? OMGAWD to be able to carry off a boa in a barnyard...Not just anyone can do that. :)
Hail lady you and I are prob the same size and if he called me that...gee thanks I have been called drama queen at least once or twice. Turn it back around and see the positive in Miss Piggy......She ROCKS :D
Take the power away from the word.......
Really everytime I see that I smile and yeap reader can be a drama queen when she puts her mind to it ;) ya just gotta work on the southern accent hun

You missed the point. We were not there and don't have an audio video recording nor did we witness it with our own eyes / ears. You don't know what the cop said or how he said it. That doesn't let Gates off the hook for being belligerent but my point was we were not there and we certainly are not inside the heads of the two parties.

Regardless of how belligerent Gates was, he was not a threat to the officer and I still want to know why he was arrested, in his own home.

He was arrested because he wouldn't shut his damn mouth even after he was told to. That's what happens when you get mouthy with a cop.

I'm sorry, but you have zero credibility on this issue.

I've seen, on several occasions, your attempts to defend and explain away some of Mike's more ridiculous, racist comments.

That takes either willful ignorance or a desire to grind a political axe.

Mike was clearly a racist a long time before Barack Obama was elected President.

I have never tried to explain away any of Mike's more ridiculus racist remarks, at all.

bring the quotes, maybe you could name the instance off the top of your head, and I'll even find the quotes.

Well I'm not so sure about that Sandhusker as not to long ago a certain judge right here on ranchers tried using he bad day in court to excuse his attack on a fellow poster. Seem to me he was like Gates and Obama he never apologized for his comments or behavior either.

It really all depends upon when the belligerent behavior that caused the arrest occurred.

If Gates verbally abused the cop after the cop had already determined his identity, then I would find it hard to justify the arrest.

If Gates was being completely uncooperative during the investigation of the reported break-in, then there may have been grounds for an arrest.

If I had arrested everyone that got "mouthy" during the seven years I wore a badge and carried a gun, I would have been a very poor law enforcement officer indeed.

Crowley may have done everything right, but it is still hard for me to imagine a similar incident happening to Larry Summers.

Obama's initial comments should have been offensive to law enforcement officers, but I think his admission that it was a mistake is good enough.

No, not necessarily. I know you believe silence equals agreement, but I do not feel that way.

and what Badaxe is talking about is my posting from the urban dictionary in reference to one of Mike's supposed racist terms.

a term that is used mostly in the black community. and I stated that if Mike was using it in a racist manner, then I disagree, but that I did not think he was.
