Sheep question

I have been cutting cedar posts out west of town a ways. Tonight the kids and I went out to bring home the four wheeler and we found an old ewe. She was standing in the road with her head down. She hasnt been sheared in a day or two and was pert near wool blind. The area she was in doesnt have water and she must'a come a ways since her last drink. We got her gathered up and tied down on the flat bed and got her home. She has a wound/abcess on her jaw that is badly infected. I sheared her head enough so she can see and cleaned up her wound with hydrogen peroxide and gave her 5 ml of penicillin. She has drank half a 5 gallon bucket of water and is laying down with her head up tonight. My question for any of ya'll who are sheep smart...... what should i do next? I'll call the vet Monday. Til then any thoughts? I have Oxcymyicin 200 or penicillin. I plan to treat the infected wound with KRS to kill the maggots. Not much of a sheep herder so any thoughts would be appreciated.

To bad Haymaker didn't see this post :?

He's our resident expert

We have a cold rain tonight if she was here she would probably be dead in the morning.
Maybe Jody will see your post :)

Hay there H. It is D' here and I have a few sheep myself. What you are doing sounds good. If the pen is working you shouldn't have to use oxy. Make sure she is eating to. As long as she is willing to get up, has bright eyes and wants to eat and drink she should be ok.

Shoot her........she's goona die anyway! By the way I have never owned a sheep, but have helped a good friend and neighbor that does, so I have learned they don't need a reason to kick. :?

LH, just tell that ol' ewe what Shortgrass and OT said about her and she will probably live to die of old age just out of spite! :p :) :)

Seriously, I think you are on the right track with her and she has a good chance of making it. Penecillin should be fine. Didn't know anyone still had some KRS around. As I remember it was good stuff.

The water consumption and setting up good is very encouraging. Might give her a handful of oats, corn, calf creep, sweet chop, or a few cubes if you have anything like that on hand. Just a taste to perk her up and get her attention, you don't want to upset her system and give her the runs.

I and neighbors with sheep have used plain ol' gasoline on maggots. E10 or E85 would probably be fine too. Don't use diesel fuel, it doesn't evaporate and keeps irritating. And of course, don't be smokin' any Marlboros if you do the gas trick.

Pine tar makes good wound dressing and keeps the flies off, but flies should be a thing of the past soon.

You are on the right track H. Make sure she is sound all around before you find a boyfriend for her. I would imagine the kids have her named and accepted into the family by now. :D

A good friend of ours Grandpa lost a cow ranch in Idaho in the 30's. He started hoboing the sheep outfits for their cull ewes and bummer lambs they were giving away. Grazed them wherever much to everyone's disgruntlement.
By 1942 he had his old ranch and some more ground bought back.

Just don't get blamed for sheep-stealin'. :p

Forgot to add.... don't call the vet over a sheep, the call will cost you more than the sheep is worth.
My guess is she escaped a coyote or stray dog.
Flush the wound(s) with water. You might shear the whole sheep and see if there are any more .

My foray into the dark under world of stolen sheep ranching was a short one. After filling her belly with water and starting treatment for her affliction, the old woolie sister paid us back by dying in the night. Little H said when we headed for bed that, if the ewe made it til mornin', she was gonna name her "LUCKY". I promptly rolled my eyes and had goat flashbacks! I only rescued her as I hate to see anything suffer choking to death which she was well on her way to doing. She was most likely lost when the sheep left winter range this spring. And she's come a fair ways as they winter sheep about 80 miles west of here. She had remnants of a paint brand but no way to tell her owner other than a overslope in her left ear. IF she'd lived, I would of tryed finding her outfit and then hauled her to a neighbor on the bad side of town who runs sheep on his place. Anyway, thanks for the help. We tryed! :?
