So our daughter, the nurse, comes home for a few days over the Christmas season. I think it's great time to sit down, relax and visit. But she thinks this warm, open weather we're having is perfect for going to the woodlot to cut some firewood.

So off she goes, and I reluctantly tag along, not feeling much like cutting firewood. This is a shot she took from the 4-wheeler with Toby as pilot.

Then she posts this on FB later in the day -

'I said to my dad
"Let's cut down a tree"
I looked at the dog,
And he did agree

So off to the bush
We went in a flash,
And soon the woods echoed
With many a crash

An ax and a saw
Cut, split and hacked,
And before you know it
A weeks firewood was stacked

So next time I say
A tree we should cut,
I'll say "Christmas tree"
To cover my butt.' :pretty:

As if that wasn't incriminating enough, she adds this one a day or 2 later -

' "Christmas Tree" Scene 2

About my dad
I never should joke.
I've cut so much wood,
I now want to croak.

Hard work is not something
Of which I'm afraid
But surely days later
My debt has been paid

The piles of wood
Surrounding the farm
Are causing the neighbours
Fits of alarm

The sun doesn't shine
Til noon or half past
Because of the shadows
The wood mountains cast

Lucky for all
The folks near and far
I'm off to the city
In my getaway car...'

:?

I then thought 'This impudence may not go without rebuttal and proceeded to post my own thoughts in reply -

'The Ole Yule Log

It appears there's a ditty
making the rounds
concerning some action
amid Christmas sounds.

It started out simple
about cutting a tree
and somehow the scapegoat
turned out to be me.

Truth be told
the plan wasn't mine
about heading out back
and cutting a 'pine'.

I wanted to sit
and enjoy Christmastime
but oh no let's go
and the saw started to whine.

Could I just sit there
and let her do the work?
Not unless I wanted to
look like the jerk!

So we cut down the trees,
cut, split and stash
where the Borers had been
a pain in the ash.

Now she's gone back
to her real line of duty
So now we can sit,
just me and Judy.

But if she seems odd
You'd better not mock,
Because she's a fresh chip
Off the weathered old block…'

Somehow I doubt that I will have the last word on this one... :)

Your poetry is creating almost as much heat as the wood you cut.

Environment Canada will be revising their forecast to a tougher winter, just because you have big wood pile.

Faster Horses - oh we seem to get along pretty good at whatever we tackle. She seems to know enough to not push her old man too much and I seem to know when I getting on her nerves so it usually all works out. And she keeps coming back to the farm...

I always tell her that since I only got to have one daughter I'm lucky to have gotten the best one ever. :)
