Shop Security

There have been a ton of break-ins around here lately, with guys loosing all of their shop equipment, tools, ATV's, etc. I am figuring out a system for our new shop and kinda thought that a very loud horn or siren connected to the door or a camera would work. Complete with a shotgun blast simulator.

We would call it "The panzmesser"!!!

Well, that British farming website I mentioned in another thread addresses the same concern in the following thread. There is such a device and it is called the "Master blaster".

What do you all use for security?

I think our shop is such a mess that there would be no way in h#ll someone could find something to steal because I sure as heck can never find anything I am looking for when I go in there.

Thankfully our neighborhood is very safe and quiet, if things change though we will most likely install surveillance cameras and start locking things up. I also have a 90 lb dog tat scares the bejesus out of people but sadly he is aging rapidly and i do not know how much time we will have left with him.

I priced out electronic solar powered gates to put at the end of the driveway but 8.5 grand is a little too rich for me.

It helps when you look like the local police dog who's bit so many of your friends in the bum. :D :D :D

Well we already have two big dogs and one house type and the only danger they would pose to strangers would be to affectionately lick them to death. . . .

About 20 years ago my brother and my shop got robbed. They took every tool we had.Went into cars that were there and stoled the stereos also. They caught them 6 months later and being they were already in jail the cops left it at that.

About a year later we had the same trouble except by the time the crooks knew it my brother had a shotgun barrel stuck in one of thems ear. After that we've never had any trouble. My brother is a bit crazy at times.

A good dog can make a really big difference. A bunch of career yard robbers were picked up a couple of years ago in our area. When they were caught they had maps that covered a couple of hundred square miles, and all the yards with dogs were marked on that map. They had scouted every road and every yard and picked out the easy ones.

One night three years ago thieves cleaned out the neighbours on both sides of us, and actually drove right by our yard a couple of times to do it. Our dog was going crazy barking that night, but we just thought it was the usual deer issue. Turns out it was not. Obviously the thieves heard her too.

HD, it shouldn't be anywhere close to that price. TSC has a gadget that connects to the gate and a controller (Mighty Mule gate opener). The controller is powered by a battery which is charged by a small solar panel. The gate hardware w/ controller is about $975. Add a deep cycle battery and a small solar panel and your set.

I agree, a dog work best!!!

someone broke into my barn one night. i guess they didnt see me working on my truck in the front shop. i heard the rollup door go up, lights went on, and he started running with one of my saddles. dogs were barking. i watched him take off running with the saddle. he spooked the horses and my old calf horse ran over him. 8) then he tried to run and climb a hot wire fence. it was the most hilarious thing. i called the town cops which is about 1 mile down the road to come get him. i put a few punches on him for good measure. his budy was waiting in the truck behind my property so i snuck over there and shot all 4 tires out on the truck and waited for the cops to come get him too.

This morning there was an old Chevy van, dark windows, Utah plates, in the ditch by where we have our heifer calves (a mile of dirt from the hiway). Looked suspicious as hell. Called the cops to come check it out, since they're not that far away. Two hours later they called back and asked if it was still there??!! Well hell no it ain't still there! :x

The way to speed up police response, when you call in , just say, " I have just shot and wounded someone breaking in". They will probably be there before you hang up

It was those UTAH plates that made it suspicious wasn't it?   We have the same problem out here with the law being too busy to help much! Now again we get thier help, but most the time we handle it alone or it doesn't get done.

There was a story about an elderly couple who noticed some thieves cleaning out their shop. The husband dialed the local police and reported a robbery in progress. He was told to stay in the house with the doors locked as they could not attend for at least two hours.
The man hung up, waited about two minutes and phoned the police back. He told them there was no rush now as he had shot both robbers dead.

Within minutes, four cruisers, a swat team, helicopter and an abulance were on the scene. The theives were apprehended and taken away.
The police Chief then said to the old man, "I thought you reported that you had shot two men."

The old man replied, " I thought you said you couldn't be here for two hours."

Don't mess with seniors. :D
