Im gettign a show heifer again this year, but not an angus, because I want to try different breeds for the future. Im stayign british so it's hereford or shorthorn-I have a good deal on a Shorthorn heifer just a ways away (Star P Farms) ro look for a hereford heifer. I diddnt look at any heifers as of yet but will when we get a break from haying-which will be in a week. lol.

Ill look at both, but I already have it pretty much picked out, just wondering what everyone thinks...

Shorthorns - absolutely no doubt about it.

If you really want to win, I'd throw some Maine on an Angus and just tell them it was Angus....lol

Al's first heifer (the one my dad gave him when he was about 3 or 4) was half shorthorn (yep, the neighbor's bull got in with dad's cows)......She was a pretty thing............a brown roan. We found her up close to the Mogollon dumpster, so named her Mogollon Roanie.......of course, Al being young, and not realizing it was a two word name, called her Maccaroni. Guess that was something he could relate to. That was the first calf to ever get his brand (which was handed down to him from my sisters and I, who got it when Dad and Mom bought the ranch from his aunt and uncle and took over the DE brand.......many, many moons ago). When dad had to get rid of all his cows, we brought Maccaroni up here and put her out with the in-law's cattle. Finally sold her when she was 5, I think. She never calved......we kinda suspect that she got lepto from the elk herds around, or possibly pine needle poisoning.......she'd get pretty close to calving, and then just lose it.......happened every year. They were always beautiful calves, though.

Never had much good luck with Herefords......just personal experience.

Good luck with whatever ya decide on.......:D

This is easy shorthorns when more final drives than just about anything, but i am prejudiced being as i raise registered shorthorns. They are flashy and eye catching in the ring more so than herefords but i do like herefords and that is a good cross.

Robin,

This is choosing a breed to breed. Like I am going to stick with shorthorns and Angus forever-not just for this calf, if that makes any sence. lol.

Have a good one
