Should we be sending...

our athletes to China for the Olympics this summer? With all the trouble going on in China,do you think we need to be sending the best of the best into this country?

Chinese authorities say they have arrested 35 people in connection with an alleged terrorist plot to kidnap athletes and others at the Beijing Olympics later this year.

CTV.ca News

Ministry of Public Security spokesperson Wu Heping told a news conference after the arrests -- which took place between March 26 and April 6 -- that "We face a real terrorist threat."

CTV's Steve Chao reported that the suspects are alleged to be part of a criminal ring in the Xinjiang region, a predominantly Muslim region in western China.

"(Chinese officials) say this group was plotting to kidnap athletes, foreign journalists, and other visitors during the summer Games," Chao told CTV's Canada AM on Thursday.

"They haven't offered up much evidence in terms of what they have ... just a few months ago the same public bureau said they foiled a plan to hijack and down a passenger plane coming from the same area."

Chao said the Chinese claimed that the alleged plotters were aiming to disturb the Olympics.

"Other critics say that little proof has been presented and they question whether these are simply excuses made to justify a crackdown on dissent in that region. It's hard for (reporters) to confirm."

Western embassies had asked for more evidence about the alleged hijacking plot but diplomats have said none has been forthcoming.

Wu said Thursday that police had confiscated about 10 kilograms of explosives, eight sticks of dynamite, and "jihadist" literature in the latest raid.

Wu also told reporters about a raid in January on a group he said was planning to attack hotels, government offices, and military targets.

Wu said that group was working under the orders of a Muslim group seeking independence for Xinjiang province.

I am not not sure on this one, as Jigs would say I have a fence post up my butt since I am sitting on the fence.

I hate when sports become political, rather it is the local little league or Olympics.

But I realize the Olympics are as much political as sports entertainment. Need more info personally but hope it does not come to a boycott of any kind.

Should we be sending our athletes to China for the Olympics this summer?

I would easily say screw china.. and cancel the games, boycott them even tell our athletes not to go..

but maybe the question should be,..Who would it hurt the most if the games were boycotted ? ,.. not china.. many would still go, and the games would go on...

For our athletes it is often a once in a lifetime chance.. a event many of them have sacrificed and trained for for their entire life..

In four years many would not be able to compete on the same level, and the opportunity would be gone...

Just as stopping the torch or spitting on the torch bearer, doesn't hurt china.. it hurts the torch bearer who was chosen to carry the torch..

While there should be a way to protest for the people of China and Tibet.. denying china the games in the first place would have been a better option..

We can't do anything to p*ss off the Communist Chinese government- since they might call in the huge multibillion dollar note they hold on this county that Clinton/GW sold out our soveriegnty/country for in order for the Walmarts/elitists corporations to profiteer off from- while the US working mans wages stagnated and earnings went backwards... :( :(

Just watched last nights O'Reilly and Dennis Miller had a great idea, all the athletes should dress up in monks robes to enter the stadium for the opening ceremony. Embarrass china and make a statement that would stand more than not going.

Come on lay off the GW bashing and discuss one topic with out sounding like the same broken record!

Your obsession with GW is on verge of being unhealthy! You sound like a scorned woman! Man up politics are politics, no one president is going to make the sky fall as much as you think one can. America has weathered politicians for over 200 years, I think we can get through 8 more months

Oldtimer, are you at all proud of America? Cause most of your posts seem to carry distain for the U.S.A. and anything that President Bush has tried to do. My grandfather spent 9 months in a French hospital after world war 1 because he was mustard gassed protecting your freedom to whine and bitch and complain about anything any Republican does. I'm just curious if ANYTHING about America pleases you of if you'd be happy as a Cuban?

I am very proud of America- and that is one of the reasons I voice my opinions....I have never in my life seen one President do so much as this idiot has in avoiding enforcing any law, eroding the Constitution, selling out the sovereignty of the nation, and losing all credibility/respect the US has in the world...I thought no one could be worse than Clinton- boy did I get surprised

For your info- my father served in Company G, the 163rd Rifle Battalion, of the 41st Infantry (Rainbow Division) from 1940 to 1945- many months of that time which were spent in an Australian hospital where he had been evacutated from New Guinea- during most of which he was unconscious without his family knowing if he was alive or dead...He was a totally disabled veteran- who died a premature death because of his war connected disabilities at age 59.....
So don't give me the current neocon bull of being holier than thou, if I don't drink the Bushite Koolaid- and because I still believe in the laws of this country, the Constitution, and the 3 branch power of government which we've survived over 200 years with- and that I've spent 37 years enforcing and protecting - all of which GW has shown contempt for and is arrogantly doing everything to destroy in his efforts to sell out this country to his elitist corporate buddies and lobbyiests....

Cheney summed up King Georges reign quite well the other day when told that some polls showed that up to 80% of Americans wanted the US to get out of Iraq-- when he answered "SO WHAT" :???: :(

I bitched and moaned when Clinton pushed the China MFN status through Congress, among several other disasters such as the Grain Embargo by Jimmy Carter but those of us with cooler heads knows that presidents don't actually have as much power as everyone gives Bush credit for.

It won't be long before OT falls in with the crowd that blames Bush for 911........Wait! Didn't Bush cause the hurricane Katrina too?

He's just that stupid.

Anyways..... :?

I can't remember the year early 70's when the Israeli atheletes were murdered? I just kind of worry we're sending our atheletes into another politically torn situation.

The monk uniforms we're tongue in cheek, but imagine the outrage China would feel. One has to be very careful setting foot in a situation like our young atheletes are going into.

China can't even get through the torch relay,"maybe" making up stories about terrorists,"claiming" the Dali Lama is causing all the trouble.

I know these young people have worked hard and are excited but my worry is are we going to loose lives again :???:

The monk robes would probably cause a pretty big, commotion. Not sure if that would be good or bad. But when Miller suggested that, then OReilly suggested arm bands or something to show a protest against China.

I think instead of boycotting the opening ceremonies some sort of arm band would be appropriate. But I think it should be the athletes that make that decision not the government.

Personally I think the athletes will be safe, china will not want an incident to make them look bad and risk the chance of getting the games ever again.

Problem is you do drink the Liberal Media Kool-Aid! You are not balanced in your views. Everything is Bush's fault, and Bush can do no good! In reality all Presidents have a record of good and bad, positive things and negative things.

The only difference in Bush is no president has had a bulls eye on his back with the Liberal Media and special interest groups and individuals like Soros. Problem with you is if the Kool-Aid is Bush flavored you drink it and suck every drop out you can, you have became blinded and for that reason can not reasonably look at both sides of the issues.

Well if the Liberal media controls the news as you say--you only have one person to thank- GW Bush....Its his appointees to the FCC that have been going against the wishes of the public opinion, ACLU, many Constitutional groups and allowing 4,5,6,7 , etc of these media sources (tv, radio, magazines, newspapers) to consolidate or buy each other out until they have one big oligopoly- of which all news or info they want put out to the public is controlled by one person- like the Turners, Soros, Murdocks...

When history looks back at President Bush, I think it will look at him as PROTECTING AMERICA including your ungrateful butt! Your argument for "leaning on the Constitution" makes me sick. You and your liberal buddies only tear down our President during a time of war. You offer few solutions except to blast Bush. You show no respect for the office of President. You are exactly like the folks you are in bed with; Pelosi, Reid, Michael Moore, Dean, and on and on.... Whining libs who can't wait to cut and run, raise taxes, push socialist balloney on everyone and screw over our country. If your type had their way ya'll would have stopped Normandy! I can picture ya standing at the front of a landing craft in your peace tee shirt, saying "stay on the boat fellas cause protecting freedom just aint worth fighting! How many attacks on America since we went into Iraq? Anyone? Anyone? Get back to YOUR liberal koolaid and slammin' any of us who disagree with your opinion.

Well your view of me is about as far from the truth as can be...

But it does not surprise me- since it appears you, like so many others, go around beating your chest and proclaiming yourself a good Conservative or good Republican- but you have been so brainwashed by the neocon bull of this present regime that you don't realize you couldn't make a pimple on a true conservatives (or old Republicans) butt and that your current beliefs of big government, nation building, no fiscal responsibility, disregard of the Constitution, etc. etc. make most of them cringe...

This administrations legacy will be that it could care less for the people of America- or what the majority of America wanted...Cheney summed up their legacy when he was told that up to 80% of the people polled said they wanted our troops out of Iraq- and his answer was "So What"

I need to tone down my emotions and apologize for taking a run at oldtimer. I just get fed up with all the politics and Bush bashing, but running off at the mouth rarely solves much. I'll agree to disagree with you and treat you with a little more respect. Hopefully you can see fit to do the same. I'll stick to the other forums where my blood pressure stays on the chart. Good luck to you and yours.
