siphon water

Hi I am wondering about setting a siphon out to fill a dugout before winter, it will be coming about 400 feet and all downhill from a different dugout. I have about a million gallons to move. Was wondering if anyone had experience with this type of thing and what size of hose is best. We have pumped it with a 6 inch honda pump a few times but gets to be a pain to have to go and fuel it up a couple times a day. Plus the expense of the pump wear and tear and the fuel. She's all down hill anyways.

Sounds like a good idea til temps get real cold. Since you'd be pulling water round the clock, I guess you could use smaller hose and save money. Like 3/4" might not be too expensive. You might try to cut slots in the suction end like a standpoint.

I'd use black plastic, at least 1 1/2", probably 2" if I was doing it, it ain't expensive, won't freeze if water's moving and easier to roll back up on a sunny afternoon than you might think.

With little to no pressure (siphon), a 1.5" ID pipe would take 20 days to move a million gallons of water with no complications.

Better get going, it will be cold soon.
