She's a sweet looking little filly but go outside right now and take those halters off. That's a no-no having a loose horse running around with a halter on. Looks good though.

I'm a newbie when it comes to horses, but was just wondering: why do you say no halters on loose horses, NR? :???:

Katy: I love that horse!! (makes me want to have one myself, lol! :P ) I don't know much about conformation (I think that's the word...)when it comes to equines, but I like her. (no, wait...I love her! )

IluvAltaBeef,
Horses are born suicidal :) They can and will get into almost impossible situations on a regular basis. A girl friend of mine even had her horse get his head stuck in a freaken bucket!!!!! Yes I do mean stuck, like fire department type stuck. It is not at all odd for a horse to scratch his ear with a hind foot and get it stuck in the halter. Now we have a panicked horse on three legs trying to kill you. If you must turnout with a halter use the break away type. Just plain ole good horsemanship :)

Well What do you think I should do if the horse is head shy and you cant catch it with out a halter because some arsehole hit them in the face whan they were little? I relieze its not a good thing to do, im not a new horse person or anything but if they were to get out we would only be able to catch them with their halters on! I can catch em and put the ropes on but i would never beable to catch em and put halters on! Its not my fault! And theres very little things they can get caught up on! We have just gotten them eating out of our hands they used to not eat any thing from our hands we can now feed em horse chunks, and alfala cubes and stuff like that! Once they get better we will take off the halters.

She is a gorgous horse aint she Iluvabeef :P

Sorry. I kinda flipped out, i know your just tryin to help!

Hey Katy, Just make sure they are the break away type. The strap behind the ears is made of a thin leather rather than nylon so if a foot gets caught it will just break. problemo solved :)

I didn't feel like you were "flippin" out just explaining...your right a horse hit in the face gets really head shy, hard to break them from that. Most horses if they get out stick pretty close to the home place and can be coaxed in...at least ours do,they love home.We all do something diff...ranchers is a great place to learn. We've never owned a breakaway halter,so there I learned something new from whats her name :P

Was that horse doing a Judith imitation?

Like I said take those halters off A.S.A.P I've had to deal with some bad experiences over the years. An old cowboy I worked for put it best my first day of work he told me -"If you get sick of working here just drive over a wire gate or turn a horse out with his halter on" lol. You'll get them gentle enough you don't them anyway.

And I learn something new every day... :) Thanks yall. Katy, yeah, she is a sweetie.. :D

Now what's a break-away halter, or I should say, what does it look like?

A breakaway halter looks like a regular halter but it has a leather band that will break ( it is always made of leather even on a nylon halter)if a horse gets caught in something. I am not in any way endorsing leaving halters on at any time but if you feel you must this is an option. This is one type that has a leather piece by the cheek. http://www.smartpakequine.com/ProductClass.aspx?productclassid=2322

Well were goin to the winter fair in like 2 weeks and there will be some tack stores with some good deals so ill check for them breakaway halters! When the horse are turned out into the pasture they dont have their halters on! They come back for feed most nights so if we need em we will just lock them up. theres NO way i would turn them out in te pasture with the halters on. They are just in the Corral for the winter!
Iluv. Want a pony? :P
