Perry may skip some debates

By PEGGY FIKAC, AUSTIN BUREAU

Published 09:56 p.m., Wednesday, October 26, 2011

AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry, whose unsteady debating performance has been a drag on his campaign, may skip some future GOP presidential debates in favor of spending time with voters, his communications director said Wednesday.

"There are something like 18 (debates) being planned … and given the fact that all the candidates need to spend time with actual voters in primary states, it seems like doing another dozen or 18 debates is not realistic," Ray Sullivan said in an interview, noting that Perry has done all five debates that have occurred since his August entry into the race.

He said Perry will participate in the Nov. 9 debate in Michigan sponsored by CNBC.

"I think what the voters need to ask is how many debates is the right number," Sullivan said. "There have already been unprecedented numbers for a primary season. … At some point, the real candidates need to spend time with voters, with local media and in town halls in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina."

Perry, who entered the race at the top of the polls, since has dropped like a rock while former Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain has skyrocketed and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has remained top-tier.

Doubts have been fueled by Perry's debate appearances, since he has at some times seemed tentative and at others overbearing. Hard right voters have been concerned about his positions on issues including immigration, since he has defended a state law he signed allowing in-state tuition to children of illegal immigrants.

Rick Perry Wants to Stop Debating: Why That's a Terrible Idea By Andrew Belonsky Thursday, October 27, 2011

Rick Perry may skip out on future debates. He should rethink this plan.

Rick Perry's debate performances thus far have been pretty grim. He gets flustered, skips questions, makes little to no sense when he does answer and came out of the five he's participated in looking less like a leader and more like a future also-ran. And he readily admits this: the Texas governor told Bill O'Reilly this week that participating in past go-rounds may have been "a mistake."

"These debates are set up for nothing more than to tear down the candidates," he said. "It pretty hard to be able to sit and lay out your ideas and your concepts with a one minute response." The debates, he claims, are just a way of "stirring up [trouble] between the candidates."

It's for that reason that the Republican presidential candidate's team now says Perry may skip future face-offs all together.

"We're about 60 days away from votes being cast," said communications director Ray Sullivan on CNN. "The candidates need to spend time in Iowa doing those town halls and spending a lot more time with the voters, who oftentimes have the best questions and press the candidates the hardest." That's true: sitting down with voters themselves indeed helps White House hopefuls make a personal connection with potential supporters, particularly in early states.

But the nation is made up of more than just New Hampshire and Iowa, and skipping the next 14 scheduled debates — yes, 14, some within a mere three days of one another — means Perry will miss out on all the press and attention sprinkled on his rivals.

Campaigns can only thrive if they can grab the spotlight, and sitting out of these media events will push Perry and his flagging campaign into the background, effectively ending his run.

Plus, passing on the debates will suggest to voters that Perry lacks the backbone to take on his opponents, and President Obama should he win the nomination. If there's one thing worse than looking unprepared or ill-equipped on a debate stage, it's looking like a coward hiding in the corner.

Rick Perry: Maybe I won't debate anymore!

And no wonder: He's fallen about 30 points since he started participating in them. Now he's threatening to boycott

Yep- old Rick knows he got his arse handed to him on the issues in the debates - so now is going out and try to play Palin type dog and pony shows as a "good old southern boy"- and sell his BS that way...

But I don't think the national folks are as gullible as Texans- or southerners- and won't buy into his history of cronyism... He's about what the majority oppose the most....

Yep even the FOX news commentators are implying it is pretty much over for Perry short of some major incident. But it is still early imo.

Perry set for at least 5 more debates

Posted on October 29, 2011 at 7:44 pm by Dana Thompson in Campaign 2012, Gov. Rick Perry, Mitt Romney

Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Rick Perry plans to participate in at least five more presidential primary debates, his campaign said Saturday, dismissing speculation that the Texas governor's lackluster performances so far would lead him to skip future Republican debates.

Perry, who has struggled through parts of his first five debates, will attend all of the events currently scheduled in November as well as a December debate, his spokesman, Ray Sullivan, told The Associated Press

The decision comes after questions over whether Perry would bypass some debates to concentrate on other types of campaigning. He has always conceded he is not a strong debater, and has often avoided the sparring matches in his past campaigns.

But he's not giving up.

"Shoot, I may get to be a good debater before this is all over," Perry joked during a campaign stop in New Hampshire on Friday.

Perry had already committed to a Nov. 9 debate in Michigan. Added to the calendar are debates in South Carolina on Nov. 12; Washington, D.C., on Nov. 15; and Arizona on Dec. 1. He'll also attend an Iowa forum hosted by The Family Leader, a socially conservative group, on Nov. 19.

Sullivan said the campaign will make decisions about future debates on a case-by-case basis.

Perry rival Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, hasn't committed to any debates beyond the Nov. 9 event in Michigan. Romney's campaign didn't immediately say whether he, too, would commit to further debates.

Let me guess, you aren't going to vote in the rep primaries. If so maybe you need to worry about the obama regimes lies first.

I'd like to believe you say such things simply to get a rise out of people.

Unfortunately, based on your posts here, I'm confident you actually are the most bigoted person I've ever encountered.....and I've met some real pieces of work through the years.

The video below is not a full version of his remarks. It is a carefully edited montage designed to highlight the giddiest and strangest moments of a roughly 25-minute speech.

the video is designed to make Perry look bad,
