Smart Cows, Silly Hubby

I Luv Herfrds

Our cows yesterday showed up us how much more they know about things then us.
Every year about 2 or 3 days after we turn the bulls in we move them across the fence into the summer pasture. Mainly to keep the bull away from our northern neighbors cows.
Well this year the plan was to let them remain in this other pasture for just over a week.
They had other ideas.

Went to help the hubby move some steers and AI cows around. I looked out towards the area we cross each year and remarked that it looked like we had a cow out in the summer pasture. Hubby told me they can fool you in that area. Still looked funny.
So we went out there and half the herd was in the summer pasture and the other half were waiting along the fence waiting for us to drop the wires.
They had knocked the gate down. :)
Dropped the wires and I just stood there and called them and they came right through.

They just seem to know. Around here we calve in the field closest to the buildings and when the calves are about 1 week old, we move them to the summer pasture just over a creek and a couple of fences.

When I get a few pairs up and start them toward that gate, they don't usually take any pushing, the mommas just trail along and wander through the gap with the calves trailing alongside. And it only happens once a year, but they seem to remember.
