in the past, i've always started calving around the 20th of March. this year i backed off a month with the hopes of avoiding those April storms.  i don't need to tell you how that worked out. :x March and April would have been pretty good calving weather this year.
like i said, i'm a model of what NOT to do.
Well, you'll feel much better about your decision the next time you have a tough April, which seems to be a guarantee. This storm isn't going to last long. If I lived in your open country, there's no way I'd calve early.
Are you having trouble with pairs staying together like Big Swede mentioned? I still can't believe that happens :? .
i've only had that happen when i've locked all the calves in the barn and left the cows out. last spring i did that, then let the calves out and nothing would pair up. every cow wanted a calf and every calf wanted a momma, but at the time it didn't matter who was who. believe me, that will make you cuss. :x i know i had a few pair that were wrong all summer. all the pairs stayed outside for this storm, so i don't think there will be any problems.....i hope.
