So far, so good

All things considered, I've been somewhat pleased with the President-elect's choices for his Cabinet. The only one that I am strongly opposed to is his choice for Attorney General. It's clear to me that Eric Holder is much too ethically challenged for that position.

In fact, Eric Holder is clearly a LIAR. And he was either incompetent or crooked in the Rich pardon. Not something I can condone, and I will encourage Senator Cornyn to strongly oppose his confirmation.

Other than that, I'm happy that the choices are somewhat moderate. I don't agree with them ideologically, but I never did believe in the Democrat tactic of opposing confirmations just because I don't agree with somebody's politics - and I won't start now.

But at some point, it looks to me like Obama is going to have to throw a bone to the far left of his party - the ones that helped him secure the nomination. They can't be happy with his Cabinet selections thus far - they're gonna want something. And it's looking more and more all the time like if they get something, that it might be in Interior, Agriculture, etc.

That scenario will be BAD for all of us. An environmental wacko at Interior or EPA - or a liberal consumer activist at USDA - will be big trouble for most of us. I hope that doesn't happen, but if it does, I sure expect you Obama supporters to speak out against it.

But except for Holder, so far, so good on the Cabinet pics. And the fact that I like it, must not be good for you libs. Even though I don't expect you to admit it.

I hope we do get an environmental wacko at both Interior and EPA and a liberal consumer activist at USDA, but I'm certainly not going to hold my breath.

I fully expected Obama's cabinet picks to be moderate, because despite all of the hysteria about "creeping socialism" in the wingnutosphere, that is what most progressives like myself expected. I think you're going to find that he is much more pragmatic than ideological, unlike the administration he is replacing.

If he does manage some serious, progressive reforms, I won't expect them until his second term. For his first term I will be content with some incremental gains, bringing the integrity of science back to the administrative agencies, and starting to restore America's reputation with the other 95% of people on the planet.

Barack Obama’s people are trying to lower expectations. Everyone thinks he’s going to be able to fix everything. If they want to lower expectations, they should keep some of those Bush people on. ~ Jay Leno

badaxemoo: Here you are already talking about Obama's second term. I think he will do fairly well in his first nine or ten months. A new broom always sweeps clean. After that we will have to look at reality.

You can't do everything without paying for them. You can't increase spending without higher taxes, you can't balance the budget without taxes.

When it comes time for his second term, all the people who do not pay taxes will be standing beside him. If our economy is in the tank then, (I am not predicting that it will be, but who knows) they will just ignore it.

I think what you're seeing here is like going to see the Grand Canyon. The trip is great but then when you see the real thing it is awesome and downright scarey. That may be what's happening with Pres. Elect Obama. Reality sets in and you say "Holy Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttt"...I wasn't aware of all of this.....whether it be the economy, national security, terrorism, military or whatever. Nothing like those daily briefings.

But I think he's made some very good selections for his cabinet. I'm hoping nothing but the best for him and the USA.

Well, that's pretty sad. Apparently, you either don't know or don't care about the impact something like that could eventually have on the ranching business. Pretty sad that we have to put up with somebody like you on a ranching site.

How about you other libs? Do any of you other Obamaniacs feel the same way?

Actually, I would look forward to the impact it might have on several sectors of the livestock industry.

Without the subsidized grain, subsidized manure lagoons, pre-emption laws, and laughable nutrient management plans, the big boys would stop profiting from externalities and pay for their full cost of production.

It would level the playing field and make sustainable, family-scale operations like mine more competitive. I'm also tired of the CAFO operators, Monsanto Toadies and other agro-fools giving farming a black eye with the public.

Well, it's a free country and you're certainly entitled to your opinion. But my experience with the federal government is that we should be careful what we wish for.

Look what we have right now.

Federal farm policy has been skewed in favor of the big boys for decades, and I never wished for that. It hasn't mattered that much if the person in the White House had a (D) or an (R) behind their name.

If his Illinois voting record is a preview of his instincts on farm policy, I fully expect to be disappointed by Obama on this issue - but I'm not a one issue voter.

At least we can agree on that.
