McCain can't put lipstick on a pig: Obama
September 9, 2008 - 21:33
Nedra Pickler, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LEBANON, Va. - What's the difference between the U.S. presidential campaign before and after the national political conventions? Lipstick.
The colourful cosmetic has become a political buzzword, thanks to Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin's joke in her acceptance speech that lipstick is the only thing that separates a hockey mom like her from a pit bull.

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama told an audience Tuesday that GOP presidential nominee John McCain says he'll change Washington, but he's just like President Bush.
"You can put lipstick on a pig," he said to an outbreak of laughter, shouts and raucous applause from his audience, clearly drawing a connection to Palin's joke. "It's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still going to stink after eight years."

McCain's campaign immediately organized a telephone conference call in response and called on Obama to apologize for calling Palin a pig. Obama's campaign said he wasn't referring to Palin; he had been talking about McCain immediately before the lipstick comment.
Obama followed up by saying Palin is an interesting story, drawing boos at the mention of her name that he tried to cut off.

"Look, she's new, she hasn't been on the scene, she's got five kids. And my hat goes off to anybody whose looking after five. I've got two and they tire Michelle and me out," he said.

McCain has used the lipstick phrase, too.Last year while criticizing health proposals from the Democratic presidential candidates, he said Hillary Rodham Clinton's resembled the failed plan she offered as first lady during the 1990s. "I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," McCain of her proposal.

In Virginia, a questioner asked Obama to join Republicans and agree that candidates' families and religion are off limits. Palin's pregnant teenage daughter and the teachings of her church, the nondenominational Wasilla Bible Church, have been the subject of scrutiny since McCain picked her as his running mate.

Obama responded that he already has said families are off limits and he's very protective of his daughters, 10-year-old Malia and seven-year-old Sasha. He said he doesn't want their inevitable future mistakes to become newspaper fodder if he gets to the White House.

Obama also is no stranger to attacks on his religion. He's been the subject of a false rumour campaign saying he's a Muslim, and the racially tinged sermons of his longtime former preacher caused problems for his campaign earlier this year.

He stressed that he's a Christian and "so the fact that Gov. Palin is deeply religious, that's a good thing." He said poking around in her religion or saying it's wrong is "offensive" and he wants to have a debate about the issues.

"But don't give people some sort of religious litmus test because I don't want somebody to question my faith and I'm certainly not going to question somebody else's," he said.

It was a compliment for Hillary. Usually everyone calls her something much worse.

Go on a cruise and you'll find the comedians are STILL telling Hillary jokes. And they are still funny.

Yheere is no way in he77 you can compare the two. The comparison you show was about a plan.
Look at oblahblahs statement, it came immediately after Gov Palins lipstick joke, and the real clincher that everyone leaves off is the second part of his slam. Remeber about wrapping an "OLD FISH" in a paper and was still an old fish. Anyone that has an ounce of reasoning power can see that the lipstick remark was for Gov Palin and the 'old fish" remark was for McCain. The thing is we all know it, now maybe some of the mind numbed obots will not admit it.

True but what you have with obama is a "personal attack "again". That's where it crosses the line. But what the heck it has happened ever since she was niminated.

But hey we have the debates yet. Seriously nowadays the debates do not change a thing. Both side come out claiming their side won. May as well watch paint dry.

Well, the attack on her daughter sickened me,but the reference to lipstick on a pig looked to be the same reference as McCains statement about Hillary. I watched both statements made last eve. NOT much difference...actually I find that kinda like a Conservative Puffin Poo'in on a liberal....childish antics, and of no importance on the political issues.

When you take the full quote, the part about the old fish.
When this quote followed Gov Palins lipstick joke so closely and when it has the "old fish" remark it seems to be deliberate. Remember this campaign has been telling us all along about the "OLD" McCain
When you have so many pieces of the puzzle fitting what can you say other than it fits,

No doute, but at the same time, the attacks are targeting her and not her family. She knew that would happen when she accepted the hand McCain gave her. Shes no withering flower,I'm seeing she handles herself really well. I'm betting she laughed at the reference....

I'll bet she did laugh about it. I think she has done women and all rural people a lot of good. Another thing it makes southerners(south of the US CAN BORDER) look at Alaskans and Canadian with new found respect. She reminded us we are all in this together.

If I were McCain, I would crack the same joke but interchange the word "Pig" with another word like........."Baboon" and really start the fire.

You know I kinda missed grade three but it's all coming back-what the world needs is a supreme teacher that the dems and republicans can tattle on each other to. Why don't McCain and Obama both write on the chalkboard. 'I am bad and will not make make any more pig references'. For crying out loud imagine how the pig feels.

Honestly....... a slam is a slam no matter what side it came from. And really a non -issue in an election.

only the media can blow something this minor that far out of importance..

Obama seemed really miffed that it had blown up and scolded us, telling us, we should stick to the issues.. maybe he should have not made the comment in the first place and stuck to the issues..

Hillary's plan is still the same ol pig.. pork is still pork.. and Obama still has egg on his face..

Oh, yeah...I forgot he's NOT the chairman of the PTA.....makes all the difference in the world.

Yanuck surely you ARE NOT gonna fall for the " chick ' thing on this deal? I had you pegged for a smarter woman than that and able to see thru all this ' estrogen cloud' that the Reps have tossed into the air.

That would really be a dumb move. I dont even think Senator McCain thinks like that. I hope not.

I really think the whole "lipstick on a pig" thing really should not have been an election issue.

It is really easy to pick on Hitlery though
I am glad Obama didnt pick her. Whether we want to admit it or not that ticket would have been fatal to us Conservatives and the nation would have been in real trouble with those two. I am absoulely amazed that he beat her. It makes one wonder what the DNC has on her.

Thats funny!

I actually believe it was just a general statement like many politicians used in past including McCain. I think it was either off the cuff, or that it was put in his speech with the key word being lipstick not pig. Using the word lipstick after palin used it would draw attention to his talking point. His point was about McCain not Palin.

So I will error on the side of Obama on this one.......omg I can not believe I said that! :?
