While Congress could likely pass the new farm bill later this week, Ag Secretary Ed Schafer says President Bush will veto it and that a veto override might not happen.

Schafer says it depends on who lawmakers listen to, “To those who want fatter paychecks, bigger you know - support, more effort in their communities and their operations from a dollar standpoint from the American taxpayers, they’re going to vote to override the president.”

Or, if they listen to consumers, “Who are looking at saying, ‘My taxpayers’ dollars are going for what? To increase subsidies in a high cost food arena?’ If they listen to those folks, then we’re going to sustain a veto.”

He seems to be trying to limit the counter-cyclical payments to the huge income producing farms.........

He wants to limit them to $200,000.00 and Congress is at $750,00.00.

At least that's what I see. If anyone can show me where I'm wrong,,,,,,,please do.

The bills also failed to limit payments to wealthy farmers as much as the Bush administration has demanded. Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer last month said the White House would accept a cutoff of aid to individuals who make more than $500,000 year in taxable income, a lower amount than proposed in the measures approved by the House and Senate.

Well they are damn sure giving him an excuse not to sign the bill,I think most of us here are against subsidies, that said,we need M COOL now, longer we have this foot dragging the better the chance it winds up getting shelved again.
Ole bush is fast getting his popularity level even lower than it is now,the republican fat cats must be really worried about November.
I think ole bush has done more for the Democrats, than clinton did for the Republicans ?
good luck

I agree Mike, limits do need to be adjusted in the farm bill............right after they eliminate the oil industry subsidies.
