While Congress could likely pass the new farm bill later this week, Ag Secretary Ed Schafer says President Bush will veto it and that a veto override might not happen.

Schafer says it depends on who lawmakers listen to, “To those who want fatter paychecks, bigger you know - support, more effort in their communities and their operations from a dollar standpoint from the American taxpayers, they’re going to vote to override the president.”

Or, if they listen to consumers, “Who are looking at saying, ‘My taxpayers’ dollars are going for what? To increase subsidies in a high cost food arena?’ If they listen to those folks, then we’re going to sustain a veto.”
