Sochi Olympians Call for Action on Global Warming

If these progressives would do their homework which I know is asking too much, they would discover that Sochi is in a subtropical climate. Their AVERAGE winter high is in the 50's. Cities in the U.S. with a subtropical climate include Houston, Jacksonville, San Antonio, etc.

You can't fix stupid.

Olympians are using the warm temperatures in Sochi, which usually has balmy temperatures during the winter due to its southern location, to call for action on climate change from global leaders. They are politicizing the Olympics to ask world leaders to reduce emissions and work toward "a compact for the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change in Paris 2015."

As UPI noted, in a "letter published today on Protect Our Winters, U.S. cross country skier Andrew Newell penned a letter demanding stronger action on climate change from world leaders."

"The continued loss of snow is only the beginning," Newell writes. "And unless changes can be made at a federal level, it will be more than our skiing that’s at stake."

He was joined by "105 Olympians, including athletes from the United States, Switzerland, Norway, Estonia, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Italy and Sweden," who signed the letter with him.

"I’m not an environmental science major, I’m not a scientist, in fact I didn’t even go to college," Newell said, "but just like most Americans, I know that as the snow dwindles so does our water supply, our food, our health and our economy."

Stupid is as stupid does

There is exactly the same amount of water on the earth today as there was 10 thousand years ago.

Althletes may be strong and actors may be pretty - but it certainly does not make them smart

Climate

Sochi has a humid subtropical climate Its average annual temperature is 18.4 °C (65.1 °F) during the day and 11 °C (52 °F) at night. In the coldest months—January and February—the average temperature is about 10 °C (50 °F) during the day, above 3 °C (37 °F) at night temperatures drop below freezing every winter for one or two days.

and when was this supposed to freeze over? did they schedule their one or two days yet?

Apart from the scenic Caucasus Mountains, pebble and sand beaches, the city attracts vacation-goers with its subtropical vegetation

Sochi 2014: A Subtropical Winter Olympics?

http://www.geocurrents.info/cultural-geography/sports/sochi-2014-a-subtropical-winter-olympics

“[Putin] has found one of the only places in Russia where there is no snow in the winter. He has decided to build these ice rinks in the warmest part of the warmest region. Sochi is subtropical. There is no tradition of skating or hockey there. In Sochi, we prefer football, and volleyball, and swimming. Other parts of Russia need ice palaces — we don’t.”

From the Russian perspective, however, Sochi definitely is subtropical. If anything is mentioned about Sochi in the Russian press, it is generally its sub-tropicality—and for good reason, as it is essentially the only place in the country with a non-freezing winter.

Short memories. Vancouver Olympics , Whistler a world class ski resort had melting temp and they struggled to get the alpine events completed. Even hauled snow in with helicopters.
As far as the indoor events why not. Heck I would rather be enjoying the games in comfort instead of fighting cold and bad roads.

Who'd a thunk they should have had them in Atlanta this week.

Don Cherry Hockey King of Canada that usually doesn't have a good word to say about European hockey players is just raving about how nice the rinks and venues are in Sochi.

I've heard nothing but good reports from the sports commentators.

From what I've seen on tv it looks like they've done quite a job there.
I don't think I'm gregarious enough for their washroom facilities though.
