Health officials say nearly 1 in 4 babies are born to unmarried couples who are living together, a significant jump from a decade ago.

The government previously said more than 40 percent of births are to unwed mothers. But a report released Thursday offers new detail showing most unwed births occur in cohabiting couples.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study was based on face-to-face interviews with more than 22,000 men and women during 2006 through 2010.

About 23 percent of the reported births were to unmarried heterosexual couples who were living together when the child was born. That was up from 14 percent when a similar study was done in 2002. The CDC did not speculate on reasons for the increase.

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A fight over a golden egg during an Easter egg hunt landed one Memphis mother in jail after she allegedly attacked another parent with a hammer.

Hunting Easter eggs can get competitive, especially when there's cash inside.

But what was a peaceful Easter celebration this weekend in Memphis, got very violent very fast.

It was a family Easter egg hunt that turned into a free for all melee.

Cirby Pearson's mother Annette is locked up at 201 Poplar and charged with aggravated assault after she was accused of hitting a man in the head with a claw hammer.

"He started cursing her out," said Cirby Pearson. "She started cursing him back. He done hauled off and smacked her. So she had, she went in and got the hammer. And she came back and bust his head with it."

Police say the man accused Annette Pearson of giving her young daughter too much help finding the prized golden egg during the Easter egg hunt.

The golden egg had seven dollars inside.

According to an affidavit of complaint the man slapped her twice which set off an all out brawl.

The fight ended with the man getting hit with the claw hammer and having four staples put in his head to close the wound.

"I feel she had the right to defend herself, whether she hit him with a two by four or anything," said Cirby Pearson.

Only Pearson faces charges. No one else was arrested, including the man who slapped her during and Easter egg hunt.

Pearson's bond was set at $20,000.

She is due back in court first thing Monday morning.
