LOS ANGELES: No more fast-food joints for now, City Council decides

The City Council unanimously approved a 1-year moratorium Tuesday on new fast-food restaurants in the impoverished south Los Angeles area, hoping to attract restaurants that offer healthier food.
The mayor still must sign the bill, which could face a legal challenge.

Thirty percent of adults in the south Los Angeles area are obese, compared with 19.1% for the metropolitan area, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health

Give me a Break! Now fast food is not allowed because some people are fat? Just like NYC outlawing Trans Fats from Restaurants.

These are perfect examples of Social Engineering that the Liberals approve of. What next outlawing Red meat and restaurants will only be allowed to sell Fish and Chicken?

Next you'll tell us the Federal government is telling states they have to make cattlemen tag all their livestock with a Federally mandated (shoved down the throat) ID or that the Federal government is telling all the states they have to have a certain type ID card for individuals (no matter what it costs the states) -- or federally mandated seat belt laws- and speed limits- and open container laws :???:

This really doesn't bother me...This is where it should be handled- at the local or state level...If the folks don't like it they can get rid of their City Councilmen...Folks in that area must agree with their thinking or they would be screaming against those council folks...

Sometimes when I go to Billings and see row after row of these cheap soyburger joints- I wish they'd pass the same ordinance

By your analogy then you should not complain about Bush, if you do not like things then you could just vote him out of office?

Problem is no one should be able to tell another person what they can eat. And even if most of the locals approve of it that does not mean it is still right. Right is Right and wrong is wrong, just because you have a large group of liberals in one area, does not mean they should have the right to limit the constitutional rights of those that are not Liberal.

Not to mention it is plain stupid, they think they can force a business to go in that will fail and have higher prices into a community of low income that will still go down to the local McDonald's for their $1 Double Burger.

Maybe they should make it mandatory that all donut stores have a scale with a limit switch attached to the door so that you can't get in if you're over so much weight.

It was stated many years ago by someone I cannot remember:

We always get the government we deserve.

Unfortunately when folks live in chicken coops designed for people, they tend to forget that independant thought is in true danger.

The media does wield a powerful stick and it has transformed North America - not always in a direction that makes me (and many of you) happy.

Just hang on to your values as long as you can - what may appear to be old fashioned today may very well be in vogue tomorrow.

After being on a low carb diet for six months, and more or less sticking to it, I have lost over thirty pounds. It is my thought that the fast food chains get a bad rap for the wrong reasons. It isn't the hamburgers and chicken that cause people to be fat. Instead it is the french fries and soda pop that are the main culprits. By selective eating and drinking, one can inhabit the fast food joints and still eat a healthy diet. Cut out the sugar and the carbohydrates.

Why is it wrong to try and help ones own community through promoting a healthy alternative to its people......They have a plethora of fast food resturantes there already..Its not control but more about offering their cummunity a better choice..

Of course stopping people from entertaining fast food on a regular basis would help save millions if not billions in health care costs, and pharmacare costs....

Does this only pretain to food...or could one use your argument for banning gay literature in public schools and thier liberaries ,or smoking bans in public buildigs.or curfews placed on public movement..why do buildings in many city's and cummunity's have building hieght restrictions placed on them...Is it not wrong for a guy to paint his front door any color he wants to,only to have his condo strata tell him he cant? ..You conservatives blame the liberals for making rules and then say that they are to slack and have no rules?.....It has been my experience that the real rule makers and right stealers, are old consevative people, that only care about thier own little world...

Most of the people, esp here in the USA and even more so in the South, are too damn FAT. Yes, I said FAT!

It causes insurance to go up, health care to go up, clothing prices go up as they are larger sizes and it takes more material.

Plane tickets are higher due to the weight factor. It's out of control.

Young people, in their 20's, FAT..with diabetes, High blood pressure, etc.

It's out of control and it's costing all of us.

Friday, I saw a kid sitting on the bench at a waterpark...with 2 HUGE burgers, fries etc...just for him. He might have been about 13 and prob close to 200 lbs. as he already had " man boobs".

I saw his parents and sister....all HUGE.

It's sad and prob out #1 problem in this country overall by the time you factor in circumstances related.

Yes, obesity is a problem, but if the reasons behind the ban are supposed to be the betterment of us all, tobacco will have be be made illegal. You will be allowed only 1 drink of alcohol a day. Donuts, candy, pop, ho-hos, twinkies, etc.... will have to be eliminated.

How much government do you want in your life?

There is the problem....we use all these " comfortable' words to cover up the truth of something.

It's FAT...not obese.

I'm not ' polite-ly challenged' at times....I'm just plain ol RUDE!

Too much PC crap going on...it hides the truth!

I've got friend....known her all my life....grew up as kids and she's always been fat to some degree.

She is one of those people who can't do anythiing by themselves...so I told her I'd come over and walk with her to her brothers and back. No....she wanted to drive to his house...walk his driveway ( paved flat) and drive back to her house. They are only about 1/4 mile apart from each other!!! GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

She told me last week that in the last 5 months she gained 60 lbs!! She's now pushing 300lbs at 5'5" tall. Her sister is 4'9" and 225lbs.

She told me that she just bought a laptop computer to use so she would not have to walk down the hall to her PC set up/desk....maybe 20' from the LR!!

Come on people....wake up here. It not like someone pulled a rip cord one nite and WHAMMO!!!!! you're the size of a small bus all of a sudden!!!!

Fat and Obese are not the same thing, you can have a beer belly and be 20 lbs over weight and you are not Obese, Obese is extremely fat. Use both words, just use them at proper times. Don't pat yourself on the back for being a rebel of words.

I always find it funny how people talk about fat people causing money. In reality fat people die early, they help keep down over population and in America they usually do not live to see Social Security benefits that they paid in for. In the end the money is a wash, yes maybe they cause more in health cost, but they save the Country more on the backside by dieing earlier.

Hmmmmm.....sounds as if AHole could loose a pound or two here!!!

I'm not using both words...I use one FAT!

Beer belly , esp on a man, is a death warrant.

You know it...you can surely ignore it or explain it away if you want....but tell it to the undertaker!

Fat people may die earlier...but while they are here...pound for pound they cost the health care system and themselves more.

And why would you want to be fat and die early anyway and leave your family, maybe hardships for them later on....or just stay that way KNOWING what the outcome can be.

There are soooo many ways now , available to whomever wants to search it out, to beat the fat.

I will very openly admit I could lose a pound or twenty. However, if you called me fat I'd lay ya out or take ya with my mouth. To me there is a huge difference in words. I like to refer to myself as undertall (I say that standing 5'10").

Would I classify myself as overweight. Yes. Use the word fat and it pisses me off. Obese is when people are so overweight it is effecting their health. The extra weight I carry around just effects my self image yet not enough to quit the mountain dew or to be more careful about what I eat.

I'm very active with two children and helping with haying and other ranch activities. Sometimes even active people can carry around extra weight.

Being rude using the word fat to me is nothing at all to self proclaim.

I'm thinking with Sandhuskers position he's smart enough to not use rude derogitory comments. Or it's just the fact his mother taught him to be kind and respectful of others.

Facts and the obvious are RUDE? By what measure?

You just stated yourself CA that you tip the scales....so why get pizzed if another person might notice that also? Makes no sense.

Husker asked how much gov't do we want to regulate us. Welll....go to ANY amusement park and you have to be " so tall to ride this ride". That's rules and regs made by OSHA and other safety organizations...no one says anything about that.

What's wrong with" if you are this fat##### you're gonna die"? It's a fact.

Sometimes the truth hurts!

.

You must have never had to take care of an elderly person? Old people in Nursing homes probably cost the Health Care more than any Obese person does. Fat people usually go along fairly fine, then just have an heart attack one day and they are no longer a burden. Old people can hang on in and out of hospitals putting a strain on Medicaid and Medicare for years.

I do not want to die and leave my family, I just believe in a persons right to do as they please if death is a result then so be it. That's why I do not think you should outlaw cigarettes even though I do not smoke, or that you should outlaw Bull Riders even though I do not ride a bull, etc......

Let people live their lives and the Undertakers sort them out, leave the Government out of it!

Liberals should not have the right to regulate life expectancy!!!
