Man shoots mountain lion in self defense

An Afton hunter killed a mountain lion earlier this month while hunting deer with his father in western Wyoming.

The state Game and Fish Department determined the killing was self defense.

Adam Lancaster told Warden Todd Graham that he killed the mountain lion on Oct. 7 as it approached the hunters while they were field dressing and boning a buck mule deer they had killed.

The encounter occurred in the north end of Wyoming lion hunt Area 14 in the Coal Creek drainage, about four miles south of U.S. 89 on Salt Pass. No one was injured.

They reported the incident immediately.

According to the local newspaper and radio, the father and son had the deer and horns packed. The father (I went to high school with) walked over to the gut pile to make sure they had the knifes, saw and everything else picked up. He looked up and the cat was on the other side of the pile, he yelled at his son, who ran and got his rifle off his horse. The father was slowly backing away from the lion when his spurs got caught in the sagebrush and he fell backward...The cat jumped landing right at his feet, he yelled and his son fired a 30-30 hitting the lion right in the heart.

Interesting story from our part of the country Jody, a guy killed a black bear with a stick. Quite a sewing job to put him back together.

My granddad shot a bear when he was 18 years old he was jerking sheep camp for Covey's on Skull Creek. He went back with trhe herder and saw 2 bawling cubs. Another herder raised them but My granddad could never shoot another bear.... but then he didn't have one attack him.
If your story had happened in Californa there been more Sympathy for the bear cubs then the hiker.Think he should be playing baseball.

We had a grizzly sow with 3 little cubs start killing cattle in 2005. The predator guys came out and we set up a cubby with 2 footsnares in it and the kill for bait.
They went home and I checked the set next morning, from 200 yards in some thick brush and scrub spruce I could hear we had a cub tied up. I backed out and phoned them that I needed some back-up.
When we went in the 1 predator guy shot 1 cub that was tied up and left the other one sqallin' for bait. We were spread out a bit and it just happen that I saw the old girl first, coming in fast and silent. I shot her and the third cub at 15 yards. She turned off and died about 10 yards from where she was shot. I hadn't made a good shot on the cub and in the 5 ft high brush we couldn't tell who was still alive. A few more shots were fired.
We were all pretty wound up by this time and the old predator guy said that since I was doing so well at killing bears that I should finish off the last cub that was in the snare.
When I looked down the sights I couldn't help but see the look in that cubs' eyes, wanting the security that would never come. Bothers me still,
but I can't afford to feed them.
We do what we have to in this business.

Footnote: The greenies are now saying that the fella from Horse Lake didn,t need to use that much force on the bear.
Having been in the same situation with the cougar they have no idea what a person will do when YOUR life is in question.
