Sold some steers today.

The market has fallen 3 to 5 dollars cwt. in the last 2 weeks but I decided to sell anyway. Could get worse, who knows. The last sale in Valentine NE was so hot I figured I would sell as soon as possible before the price went down, not soon enough. I had 2 loads of steers just over 600# at about $1.12.

Usually I push my calves after weaning and they usually weigh 750# or so by now, but last year I told myself I would never do that again because it seems that you never get paid for the weight you put on. Today was a good example of that. Steers weighing from 550# to 750# dollared out on the average of about $685 per head give or take a little. The extra feed and pounds invested was for nothing.

I still have all my corn in the bin, now if that was just worth something.

Still sounds like a pretty good sale compared to December prices. At least you saved a lot of feed and no longer have the hassle of having them around. Do you need a calving job since life has gotten so easy?

I'd say you hit a really solid market. That would work out to unheard of prices in CDN. dollars - like about $1.34.????

I guess they sold OK but I feel for the guys who put that weight on for nothing and could have sold their calves for $40 or $50 a head more a couple weeks ago. Timing is everything in this business. Well maybe not everything but it's a lot. If you are lucky enough to pick the right week, could be the difference of profit or loss for the year. Kinda sucks.

Congratulations. That sounds like a pretty good sale. At that price I would rather be selling than buying. If you put 700 lbs on them @.65/lb that would end up at about 86.7/cwt breakeven and that is without trucking, interest or death loss. Takes a pretty strong stomach buying cattle these days. I hope they make a mint. :D
