Right off the bat, things went to heck in a handbasket. We had gathered a bunch of cattle to move into the next pasture.
I was mounted on my horse near the gate counting cows as they came through. In the distance there seemed to be a problem.
A cow and her calf abandoned the herd to dash off into the distance. A junior member of our firm took off in hot pursuit.
The cow turned, the calf turned, the horse turned, the loose saddle turned, and the Kosmo Kid bit the dust.
He said it didn't taste good. Ol' Sundance spooked and made a wide circle of the pasture at a rapid rate of speed.
It looked like the saddle might be done for. All that happened was that the Blevins buckles came loose allowing the stirrup leathers
and stirrups to fall free. Only the tree of the saddle made the trip underneath the horse and it wasn't hurt.
The only casualties were one broken bridle rein, a Blevins buckle that needs repaired, and the wounded pride of a cowboy.
Now when Ken Overcast says, "And don't forget to check your cinch," this young man will listen.

The whole morning was a shambles. This young five-year-old cow laid in a bull hole wrong, tipped upside down, and kicked the bucket.

A different horse and a different saddle gave the Kosmo Kid a whole different outlook.

You aren't alone in days like that Soap. We came home to a dead calf at the back gate. The young fellow that stayed here for the weekend missed seeing that it needed treating.

No matter how hard we try, we can't kill them all.

As for Kosmo, that was just one of life's lessons. Glad it turned out with only a little damage to a saddle.

isn't amazing where cows will cast themselves some of the darndest places , as for kosmo, my grandfather always said there are a few simple rules to a horse that was one of them :D , glad to here he was hurt , pride heals faster then bones

my last twisted saddle was worth two cracked vertebrae but my cinch broke-I'm a bit brittler than the kid I'd wager. A buddies wife was saddling outriding horses for him and didn't get it tight that was not pretty. Good that is a quiet horse and didn't buck the saddle apart seen that a couple times lol.

We branded at my uncles place Sunday. Probably did 400 calves and then head and healed 75 yearlings. After all that work two of my cousins were wrestling on the lawn and one of them got his leg broken in 3 places. Funny how things happen sometimes.

Poor old Sundance. He looks bewildered.
Glad no one was hurt and the damage was minimal.

When I was young and foolish, I pulled a stupid stunt.
We had a real nice horse that I rode, he was really a big horse.
I got off to open a gate and then checked my cinch. For some
unknown reason, I undid the front cinch and left the back cinch
hooked up. I didn't have hold of the reins and the horse started
to step away. Instead of getting ahold of the reins, I attempted
to put the saddle back on the horse, as it had slid sideways a
bit. As I said, this was a big horse and I had to push it up
quite aways. The horse moved more and the saddle slid more, until
it got under his belly. He took off, probably at about the
same speed Sundance did. Went down and through
a barb wire gate (luckily h

He hit the gate straight on and didn't
do any damage to himself). He finally got both hind feet up
above the back cinch and busted them. We heard the leather pop
when it snapped in two! Then the saddle came off.
the horse stopped and I was very much in trouble!!

So tell Kosmo, he's not alone...

At least, no one was hurt, the saddle was repaired and I never
did that again.

Coal is just a diamond in the making. Sometimes hard to see in the dark at the bottom of the mine though.
