Some Fat calves on fall hayfields

We have had a little bunch of feeder calves on a leased meadow all summer. Some summer calves that were on the lite end of the weaners last fall. We just turned them out into some hay ground that has frozen back. They have done well in my humble opinion.

4 heifers and a single steer. As the heifers have fleshed out they look a little more worthy of a career as a cow instead of a steak.

But they didnt make the cut when we weaned so the die is cast. Gotta pay the light bill! :D

In the bunch is a doggie heifer one of my friends gave to little H last fall. She has gained well and will make a nice beef. Little H gets the check and will start her first savings account with it. We had a long talk about why we can't keep every calf as a future cow and how we raise calves to sell. She's learning what a lot of us already know........ every calf that gets on the truck is a little bit hard to watch go! And then the check helps ya forget! :D

Putting on pounds. :D

The lone steer in the bunch. Ought'a go about 1100 or so.

A heifer we gave to my in-laws as payment for pasture. Gonna AI her in the spring. Her mother is a tank that throws square, girthy calves. This calf will be 19 months when we breed her the first time. She was born on the mountain late last year. Caught her cow up 2 full months this year. :D

Just some plain ol' black fats we raised. As long as folks keep lining up to buy them, i'll keep raising them! 8)

Tell Little H to name her calves after some teacher she doesn't like. It helped my kids be happy when it was gone (along with the check). Kinda like moving on to the next grade.

Reminds me of my daughter at age 14. A long time ago now

She bought a calf from the neighbour - actually he gave it to her on the promise she would give him money at the end of 4H sale day. Half of what she earned up to a maximum of 450 dollars which is all he wanted for the calf.

So this calf comes home and she works it all winter. Feed and water and halter training.

Show day comes and she is all excited. In fact she wins all her classes except showmanship - comes in second on that one to a real good kid she is friends with.

It is a big show and her calf gained well and sells at auction. All said and done she gets the high bid from the local veterinarian at around 2.50 a pound on a 1350 pound calf.

She walks out of the ring with the ribbons and busts down crying as she realizes her buddy "Lotsa Moolah" is going on the truck.

So I dust her off and tell her she knew this but of course she is bawling her eyes out and even goes to bed that night with tears.

Next morning she gets up and comes into the kitchen and sits down at the table and looks pretty bad - I asked her if she had a tough time sleeping. She told me yes - until about 0300 - when she finally got to sleep.

Then she looked up at me and kinda smiled and asked this question:

"How long before the cheque comes Dad?"

I howled with laughter - she was on the mend!

They learn fast.

Raise them right H - and love them hard - because they will be gone tomorrow - that is how fast the time goes.

Regards

Tell Little H those tears will come in handy. I quickly learned in the 4-H sale ring, if you could turn on the tears, the bids jumped dramatically   .

The cattle look very nice H. You and your family live in a beautiful area :D .

Good story BC...and I love the name of her calf...

Good luck to your little one, 'H.
Our daughter had a hereford steer and a colt in 4-H.
That colt was a handful and the steer was really nice.
We'd tell her to go ride the colt and lead the steer for excercise.
What she would do, no kidding, is ride the steer and lead the colt!!

Even at the fair, when that steer was 1200 lbs. the kids were
riding him everywhere. Any kid, all kids. There really were
tears shed over him!!!
