We have had a little bunch of feeder calves on a leased meadow all summer. Some summer calves that were on the lite end of the weaners last fall. We just turned them out into some hay ground that has frozen back. They have done well in my humble opinion.
4 heifers and a single steer. As the heifers have fleshed out they look a little more worthy of a career as a cow instead of a steak.
But they didnt make the cut when we weaned so the die is cast. Gotta pay the light bill!
In the bunch is a doggie heifer one of my friends gave to little H last fall. She has gained well and will make a nice beef. Little H gets the check and will start her first savings account with it. We had a long talk about why we can't keep every calf as a future cow and how we raise calves to sell. She's learning what a lot of us already know........ every calf that gets on the truck is a little bit hard to watch go! And then the check helps ya forget!
Putting on pounds.
The lone steer in the bunch. Ought'a go about 1100 or so.
A heifer we gave to my in-laws as payment for pasture. Gonna AI her in the spring. Her mother is a tank that throws square, girthy calves. This calf will be 19 months when we breed her the first time. She was born on the mountain late last year. Caught her cow up 2 full months this year.
Just some plain ol' black fats we raised. As long as folks keep lining up to buy them, i'll keep raising them! 8)
