Some pics of the last week

Since the weather turned on me this past week, I guess its time to put a halt to my outside projects and share some of the photos I took this week.

DSCN5194.JPG

Last Sunday, some of the bred heifers grazing cornstalks. Its been a great winter here so far. Just fed a little alfalfa every now and then for protein. Just enough snow the past couple weeks so they can graze and eat snow if they want.

A heifer that was near the fence.

A couple days later when delivering salt and mineral and breaking ice. More hungry for salt and mineral than water though.

Some more coming to see me.

A favorite heifer who seems kind of proud of herself.

This morning, since weather is changing, I decided to bring the bunch of older cows home from cornstalks and since I needed this pen for them, I moved the twos and the commercial 3 yr olds closer to home too.

heifers gathering up and ready to follow me.

Heifers are home. Weather is getting worse. Now I got to go get the cows.

DSCN5236.JPG

Found the cows in the cornfield. 3 miles from home. No windbreak except a dugout bank. I am afraid that the days of cows feeding themselves is gonna be over so they get to come closer home. I can always take them back if the weather man is wrong.

I had to get 30' from them before they came to the tractor. They looked at me like what is he doing here.

Following the trail well.

Was the photographer tipsy or what?

Heading down gravel road with the wind

getting closer. I didn't think they were going to go into the pasture that I wanted them in and walk against the wind.

Almost there,

Stringing out nicely again

Entering the pasture the heifers were in, but going in a different gate.

Final destination. Cows finally got the carrot I had been dangling in front of them.

The cattle look really good. It also looks really cold....I just turned on the AC (sorry I couldn't resist telling that little tid bit) I can sure understand why the 985 heifer is a favorite she is really nice deep and wide. Good luck with this bad weather I am glad you were able to get them all close to home.

Cows look good as always SMN Herf. It always makes me feel better when the cows are close to home this time of year. I thought you might be getting more snow up there this winter but it doesn't look like you have had much either, till now that is.

Good things do seem to come to an end don't they? I added a couple more bales to the bunch we have been supplementing on "bullfrog alfalfa" today. Grass is starting to run out and 30 below temps don't help much either.

Your cattle were nice and full and in excellent condition.

You should be ashamed of yourself-- making those poor skinny old cows pick on their own out in the snow and live on them cornstalks this long- probably gave them an inferiority complex  :p

Your cows are looking good to me-but your weather ain't.... I'm getting sick of seeing nothing but white  .......

Thanks, Its nice to have them in a place were they have some windbreak. Nothing makes me happier than to not have to feed cows until after Christmass.
We haven't had much snow this winter. We've had 2 to 3 inches a couple of times but melted it off. About 10 days before Christmass, we picked up about 4 and then we had another 3 or 4 a couple days before Christmass that stayed but we settled it pretty well the last few days with 35 plus temps. Now it sounds like we will get upt to 12 with 20 to 40 mph winds for 2 days.

Thanks, but you didn't have to rub it in though.
I will still take a good snowstorm over a huricane, flood, or those mud slides they have been having in California.

Your cattle are beautiful, SMN Herf. They all look so clean and freshly bathed, and their condition and bloomy hair coat can't be improved upon. Thumbs up. :) The black one does kind of screw up the color scheme, however.
