Nebraska plants make ready for inspections

KTIC 840 Rural Radio

July 13, 2006

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ Steve Sands, chief executive of Premium Protein, says he's expecting a thorough review when the Japanese visit his company's plant in Hastings next week. But Sands says the higher prices export markets offer for certain cuts of meat make the process worth it.

But thousands of other U-S beef processing plants have decided not to bother with exporting to Japan.

I bet a lot of plants don't ready themselves for USDA inspections and the USDA still allows them to sell beef in the USDA.

Maybe we should hire Japanese inspectors instead of USDA inspectors.

We might then have the high food safety standards that the USDA claims we have.

The Japs spent 2 days at Creekstone this week.

Japan has a much lower rate of foodborne illness than the U.S.
