some yearling bull pics

We have one Pieper Boadacious cow. I kind of cringe seing his picture on every Red Angus advertisement. Sure he is good to look at, but probably not what the breed needs to be promoting.

Those EPD's are tricky! What is wrong with a 90 pound birthweight if the calf is long and lanky? It's those blocky shoulders and hips that cause lots a problems in my book. EPD's do not account for calf shape. On another note, a vet once told me I'd be suprised about how many calves are born backwards, legs first! He claimed it could be as high as 40 percent of unassisted, un-witnessed births ( i.e. calving on the desert) I have only seen a few born that way, but it would be interesting to know.

Actually, epd's do account for calf shape in a way. The calving ease direct epd is -14. That means that they apparently are not the right shape or are very large.

I'm not an epd freak, but -14 is off the charts.

AX at what percentage of accuracy does the CE epd become an accurate description of calving ease and stop being heavily loaded with the BW epd? That's probably not a very clear question but in a young , low acc bull, the CE epd is heavily loaded with the BW epd. I'm sure as a bull gets a higher acc on his CE number that BW epd has less to do with it and it becomes more a number about actual CE but I don't know at what point it it mostly CE information and less about BW.

Not sure of the answer Red Robin. It should also be pointed out that the CED is a measure of calving ease bred to first calf heifers. I'm sure the bull is not bred to heifers now, but he may have been earlier in his career since his BW was not that large. He may be fine on cows, really don't know. I know we have a daughter out of a real low BW BJR line (Travel Jack) that adds at least 5 lbs. of birth in our herd.
