Had to post this one for BMR and others up here who still have a lot of snow. This is what happens when you get 2 days of +8 C, and nights that stay around 0 C. Yes, that really is water!!
She started out like this....
And now she looks like this
Some heifers off of old cows that we culled last year
This one was raised on the Nurse Cow
And this one was weaned in August
And this one has been a pain in the butt since she was born....
Her mama was a chronic pneumonia, she weighed 57 lbs at birth. We had a cow lose her calf the night before, so the plan was to adopt her out. Well DH was in the process of hobbling the not so co-operative NEW mama. Left this one in a pen by the barn. Took him over an hour to get the hobbles on, then he went to get the calf, and it was gone, literally had vanished. He called me at work (stockyards) to tell me this. He said he lost the calf, and I thought he meant it had died. No he said, he really lost it, had no idea where it was. Had looked every where TWICE. Finally, about 6 hours later, he checked the corner of the nursery paddock AGAIN, and found her curled up under a bunch of weeds. She was hungry, but OK (apparently a 57 lb calf can fit through a real tiny hole). Mama took her without too much fight, and she grew up really good. Good enough to stay in the replacement pen anyways....
