South Korea, Canada resume beef talks

South Korea and Canada on Monday resumed technical talks regarding expanded access for Canadian beef exports to Seoul.

Korean media reported that Seoul intends to offer Canada access for all boneless, bone-in and offal product derived from cattle younger than 30 months of age.

"This would represent commercially viable access to the Korean market for the Canadian beef and veal industry," Canada Beef Export Federation President Ted Haney was quoted as saying in Resource News International. "This would be a very welcome and long-awaited development, representing great value to Canadian cattle producers."

However, Haney noted that the World Organization for Animal Health allows for controlled-risk countries such as Canada to export all edible beef products derived from cattle of all ages so long as specified risk materials are removed. "This is full trade normalization, and this is our goal in Korea," he said.
