Fried Chicken or chicken fried steak....mashed 'taters w/ gravy. Turnip or collard greens ( I doubt you have the latter in the grocery), blackeyed peas, corn & or cornbread & cut up some tomatoes in big round slices!

And...last but not least sweet tea that has enough sugar in it so that it's almost crunchy!

Where's your Mom from if she's Southern?

I'd cook her a big mess of "Creek Slung" or "Stump Beat" chitlins with a big pot of cheese grits.

She'll feel real loved..............

You really need some boiled okra in them peas just to put some flavor in those ham hocks too.

Make a big bowl of banana puddin or some peach ice cream for dessert.

At the grocer, when you find the chitlins, look just to the left and the okra will be right there between the rutabagas and the mustard greens.

:gag: to the chitlins, not too sure about the grits either.

Kolas meal sounded good though, although I'm also not too sure what black-eyed peas are,but they're a veggie I presume and I've never met a vegtable I didn't like.

Blackeyed peas is the same thang that some folks call cowpeas.

If it was me.....n I was gonna cook a southern meal for my mama. It'd be Chicken Fried steak with milk gravy, some "southern fried" cabbage with bacon in it, blackeyed peas, n cornbread. And yeap....a meal ain't southern unless ya got sweeeeeet ice tea with it!!!!!

One time Mr Lilly was over helpin one of his Great Uncles...I don't remember if they were workin on a tractor or buildin fence or what. But he'd been over there all day long. He came in the house, to wash up. His uncle had been in the kitchen cookin. He said, come on and sit down and eat. Mr Lilly did......They had black eyed peas, corn bread, and what Mr Lilly thought was fried squash. Turned out the "Fried squash" was fried Chitlins. He said it wasn't half bad.
I myself, have never eaten any, and don't plan to. But if they tasted like fried squash.....I could. My fear is.....they wouldn't LOL

Katy.. Jsut check your frozen food section.. You might be surprised. I know we had them in Montana and I know we have them here, Just with the peas and such.. WE had all of that stuff in Chicago land but that was for the african american comunity.. used to buy Muster, Turnip and Colalrd greens all the time for the Iguanas, lol...

Find it amazing they don't have grits over with the oatmeal or something like that.. I actually prefer grits over all the other hot breakfasts all though you can cook it a number of ways and serve it a bunch of diferent ways too... I think some of the way you would prepare it and serve it would be regional as in Southern Illinois might do it differently than Alabama who migh serve it different that South Carolina....

The only "Southern" food my mom ever mad was Southern Fried chicken with a cream gravy (White gravy) and mashed potatos and some sort of green that I couldn't tel you what it was thinking back.. Beyond that my wife has maed a few things she got out of a cookbook or something
