Southern folk beware of Sassafras Tea!!

I was making some Sassafras Tea today...yes the hard way...and a friend of mine told me that I was doing something illegal. B.S. was my comment.

Come to find out the oil ' safrole' that is in sassafras is used to make the drug Ecstasy!!!

The concentrates of the tea that you can sometimes find in the grocery are safrole free....and that's why they taste so ' dull' and not like the old fashioned tea as the ' flavor oil' has been taken out.

Who'd a thunk it?????

We didn't get to make any this year as ,believe it or not, hardly any of the kudzu bloomed!!!

On that we agree. :)

One of my pet peeves is when there is no bulk sugar dispenser on a cafe table. Instead there are those little paper sacks, where they can "count" the evidence. The local waitresses are all accomodating, and even though there are the little paper sugar thingies on the table, they bring me a regular old sugar pouring device for my iced tea. I appreciate this very much.

It also acts as a blood thinner and has been linked to cancer. Frankly I prefer sweetening it with honey.

Everyone is going to die from something at some time. What sweeter way to go than by having sugar in your iced tea?

You are THE ONLY person in NE that I've ever come across that wants sweet tea!!!

In any eating establishment, good to bad, when I'd ask for sugar or something to sweeten my tea...they'd look at me as if I was from Mars or something.

When I'd make tea @ the house in SB and feed the guys lunch sometimes ,trying to be nice to the hired help and give them a break from the truck stop food, they'd ask for tea....then they'd act as if I'd given them liquid death. 3 yr olds couldn't produce more sour faces!!

After that happening once or twice....all they got was water straight from the well....that was about 20' from the edge of the Dinklage feed lots at the back of the house!!

I fixed them!! I'd never seen ' yellow' tap water until then!!!!

Bacon will cause cancer....Mt Dew will cause cancer   ( I'm as good as gone then)...too much water will kill ya.

Moderation is the Golden Rule.

Just don't drink 5 gals of ' sass' tea and run around with a razor....you'll be fine!!

When you did serve tea, it served two purposes. One, it was something to drink, and two, it was a camouflaging agent to hide the water's real color. With sugar added, it was not only sweet tea, but sweet pee tea.

Ohhh...I used different water for my tea for sure.
I just used the 'magic' well once or twice to get my point across!!

Once I ran a tub of water for a nice, long, luxurious bath....and then found out rather quickly and uncomfortably there was more sand in the bottom of the tub than on the mud room floor!!!!

Showers from then on!

I'm not sure that even if I had added 5lbs of sugar it would of made that sassafras tea any better...lol

And Soapweed!!! You are the only Nebraskan I know that prefers sweet tea over "REAL" tea! I'm shocked!

I'm having some Alabama folks over tonite for supper...and I'm serving water and plain ole tea..lol They'll cringe fer sure..lol

I am gonna ask em though about kudzu jelly...that sounds interesting!

You better put somthing on the table to sweeten the tea with if you want them to come back.
