Spaying Heifers

Does anyone have any experience with the little device that they use to spay heifers? I've seen them cut open to do it, but have heard of a new device that is inserted and does something to the ovaries. Any info as well as use and results would be appreciated.

We did it one year on 60 heifers. Got the vet to come out. I think it cost $3/head. Didn't really notice any difference on gains though. Also expect about 1-2% death loss

We had a vet from Ft. Pierre do it for us, If I remember right the tool he used was a little different than the one above tho, was really fast I thought, He did 740 hd in two days and only lost one, and she died in about 1 hour, he said it was shock. With the rest we had no problems and gained about as good as Strs., did implant them also, If i was going to have hfrs. spayed again would sure would do it that way again. 101

I spayed a nice set of heifers one year, and I remember the vet telling me I was sitting on a gold mine. Well when the tallies were done that fall, that "gold mine" only cost me two thousand dollars. As Jimmie Dean would say, "I never reopened that worthless pit!"

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to try it on some for myself and see how it goes. I've had a few people that I day labor for that have wanted me to do some for them. It doesn't look very promising on being able to obtain the instrument though.
